Thought on SEC schedule [league decides to stick with 8 games in 2024]

The league doesn't care about history, the athletic directors don't, so it's rather pointless for fans to get weepy over lost traditions and potentially lost rivalries. Why would we want to play bama ever year--the strongest program in the conference? It's a cutthroat, greedy business--and fans should approach it that way now as well. We're better off not playing bama.

If you follow this path to its ultimate end, we're better off playing bottom feeders every year and play no one of any significance until the playoffs. I'm not weepy - I hate it. We've played Alabama every year for my entire life. I'm old enough to know what it's like to beat Alabama, Georgia and Florida and what it means when you do. I want to play Alabama every year because I want to beat them every year. I want to go to games using my season tickets that are good games against good teams - not to simply celebrate a win. You may be right that we are better off, but to me, losing the opportunity to beat Alabama is just as bad as losing to Alabama - especially now that it seems like the pendulum may have swung back towards the good guys.

Revamp the two divisions

West……………..…East

Arky……………..….. Auburn
LSU……………..….. Bama
M-State……………...Florida
Mizzou……………....Geogia
Oklahoma…………..Kentucky
Ole Miss…………….South Carolina
T-A&M……………..,,Tennessee
Texas……………..….Vandy

Are you insane? Us, FL, Ga, Bama, Auburn in the sane division? Why don’t you just line us all up and hand each other pistols? That would be a bloodbath. The other division gets Ok and LSU and that’s it.

That’s why I said might. No one at this point knows what the scheduling will look like. Alabama has actually played Mississippi State more than any other SEC school.

Agreed, none or us know what they will do with the 1 permanent opponent. However, I think Bama/Auburn is one of a few layups for the conference along with Ole Miss/MSST and Texas/OU.

Nonetheless, as long as our 1 permanent opponent is not Bama or UGA we are good.

What has Auburn or FLA really done of late?

I kindly disagree with you, that only LSU or Oklahoma are relevant teams (or game) in the West.

lol
Firing a boom to D. White for being a wimp, voting no, like just like Saban.

I know many want to keep the tradition and play Bama every year. It’s simple. Win and make it to the championship game. There is a good chance we will still play Bama.

Surprised as well but our 1 permanent opponent will be Vandy. This is a good format for us. Curious on what they decide for 2025 and beyond.

All eyes will be on that 2024 schedule.
Could be Alabama

As much as I like playing Alabama, I miss playing Auburn, and the others. I'd gladly give up a yearly game if I got all of them over other year instead of once a decade or less. All teams will be available to become rivals playing each other that routinely. Imagine Tennessee never playing Bo back in the day or Herschel and many others.
I could have done without playing Herschel.

It’s quite easy. In an 8 team 8 year span each team plays the following:
1 permanent Team - 8 years
2 Teams - 7 years - off 1
2 Teams - 6 years - off 2
2 teams - 5 years -off 3
2 Teams - 4 years - off 4
2 teams - 3 years - off 5
2 teams - 2 years - off 6
2 teams - 1 year - off 7

SEC wants the SEC rivalries that makes the most money.
TN vs Bama is a mega SEC tradition. I can’t see them scratching that. So I think Alabama will become our permanent UP to when SEC expands

I expect Bama will be in our "rotation" and UGA will be in Auburn's when the schedule comes out June 14.

Yeah I can see that. Even if we get Vandy as our permanent we could still get Bama from 2024-2031 and Auburn 2025-2032. That’s how I’m viewing it. Everyone’s permanent team is everyone else’s “counter off” . We would play Miss st vs Ole Miss same amount of times but off years. Lets say we play them always 5 seasons in a row.. but ole miss is (2024-2029) and miss st is (2027-2032)

As I understand this quote from Sankey basically, there is not a "permanent" for 2024, it's "just 8", but traditional rivalries will be protected:

“Creating a one-year schedule will provide a longer on-ramp to manage football scheduling around existing non-conference commitments of our members. It will also provide additional time to understand the impact of an expanded College Football Playoff and engage with our media partners as we determine the appropriate long-term plan for SEC football scheduling.
During this time of change, our fans will continue to enjoy traditional rivalries and begin to see new matchups presented by the addition of two historically successful football programs to the SEC."

Hmmm.. so they could schedule base off projected rankings?
Teams 1-4, 13-16 play each other in a round robin
Teams 5-12 play each other in a round robin

Saban has submitted the 8 game schedule that he will approve for Alabama in 2024.

Vanderbilt Home
at Vanderbilt
Kentucky Home
at Kentucky
Miss State Home
at Miss State
Arkansas Home
at Arkansas

seems fair.
If you haven't figured this guy out - he knows his team last year and this upcoming year are not good so he has changed his tune. Wasn't he one of the coaches wanting a nine game sec schedule before? Can't wait for him to git. Tired of his crap and thinking he is all that.

Probably the only teams that will vote for the 3/6 idea are the ones that get the "easiest" permanent 3. Though, who is to say what team is going to be easy 20 years from now. Think how much team's "power" have shifted back and forth and back again since the division split.

If they go the 3/6 route, it is a bit difficult to preserve rivalries (though they showed in 92 they didn't care about those when Vols lost Auburn and Ole Miss). I figure there will also be a regional aspect to it as well.

I got bored so I did a pointless exercise. I went to each team's Head-to-Head page at Tennessee Volunteers Head-to-Head Results | College Football at Sports-Reference.com, I tried to pick out teams that each have played the most. Here are the 3 I think will preserve the most rivalries (some got easier roads than others):

Alabama - Auburn, Miss St, Tennessee
Arkansas - Missouri, Texas, Texas A&M
Auburn - Alabama, Florida, Georgia
Florida - Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina
Georgia - Auburn, Florida, South Carolina
Kentucky - South Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt
LSU - Missouri, Miss St, Ole Miss
Miss St - Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss
Missouri - Arkansas, LSU, Oklahoma
Oklahoma - Missouri, Texas, Texas A&M
Ole Miss - LSU, Miss St, Vanderbilt
South Carolina- Florida, Georgia, Kentucky
Tennessee - Alabama, Kentucky, Vanderbilt
Texas - Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M
Texas A&M - Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas
Vanderbilt - Kentucky, Ole Miss, Tennessee

Strength of schedule will definitely impact the championship going forward... watch the maneuvering now! Go Vols!

He was for the 3-6 format until he learned that the 3 for Bama would be Auburn, UT, and LSU. He wanted MSU instead of LSU and when he learned that the SEC would not make that switch, he moved to the
1-7 format position.

I favor the 9-game setup, but I just hope we don’t lose any of our interesting OOC matchups in the rest of this decade when/if that does come to pass. I’m very much looking forward to our home-&-homes with Nebraska and Washington in the future.

I think it's pretty clear they are protecting the rivalries first and foremost. After that, who knows? People will complain no matter what, that's really the only certainty.

Not going to happen. The Iron Bowl is the biggest draw of the season. Alabama will keep Auburn.

Might as well get over that. UT is famous for cancelling OOC series.
