Thoughts on Sal Sunseri now?

If sal had taken that D to Oregon they may have been last in everything instead of almost. One big difference. Plus no Curt this year at all...sal sucked as a DC.
Sal may or may not be a terrible def co-ord. I would have to see him after a couple of years with good players to make a judgement.

In 2012 , we lost our leading tackler and leader in the secondary Brian Randolph. He played part of 3 games under Sal, and the defense went straight downhill. He played all 12 games in 2013.

AU RB had right at 200 yds rushing and Marshal almost had as many yds as Winston passing. In fact, AU had that drop in the begginning that would have given him more... yea thats sal. FSU had the ball last or we wouldnt even be talking about sal and a title

Yeah I agree...and the missed FG would have put Auburn up 31-10 at half...if's and but's....but I agree...Auburn really had the mo going lost it in the 2nd half...just lightly impressed with FSU...the way the media was talking they were one of the greatest teams of the modern era...I just didn't see that....

and great speed and talent sure makes a DC look great....we had basically none of that last year when Sal was here..

Yes that's what I mean. When you lack speed, strength, and overall athleticism compared to your opponents... your probably going to be a very bad unit! So many fans don't want to realize how far off we've been in terms of true SEC talent. Half of our starters would be second string on the top SEC teams right now. Sorry...but that's where we are right now. I do think we're starting to "slowly" make a positive climb in overall team talent...but it's not going to be fixed with one recruiting class.

So our defense goes from ranked in the high 30s in the nation to ranked in the 100s, and Sal had nothing to do with that??

Please.

Even if he was the DC, the talent gap between us and FSU is enormous and still couldn't be compared fairly.

This. The offenses this year's defense played were better. Remember how Georgia State and Troy racked up a ton of yards on us? Alabama's offense was better this year, we traded NC State for Oregon, Mizzou's offense was better this year and we played Auburn, which featured an offense better than anything we faced last year, and we STILL had a statistically better defense.

The 2012 and 2013 defenses each gave up the exact same 6.1 yards per play. The only real difference between 2012 and 2013 was that this year's offense had the ball for 2 more minutes a game, resulting in the opposing team running 8.7 fewer plays per game on average. That is why we gave up 54 yards per game and 6.7 fewer points per game this year.

If the other team had 8.7 more offensive plays per game, they probably would have gained 53 more yards, and scored as many points in 2013 against Tennessee as they did in 2012. The problem was not Sal. The change of system hurt some both years, but we do not have the players to compete in the SEC yet.

And this year's defense was more resilient with the Couch fiasco, Saulsberry/Vereen/J.Smith injuries, etc. Also did much better in turnovers but I don't have stats handy.

This year we had a lock down corner; last year we had statuesque corners.

I love Sal. If it wasn't for his fat incompetent a#s Dooley may have gotten another year to put us farther behind the 8 ball.

As I stated...Sal trying to run the 3-4 when we hadn't recruited for those skill sets on the DLine is a huge reason we ranked in the 100s.....please!

Buddy Hackett was awful as a DC... probably not a bad position coach, but not a DC...
I mean who else has 3 and 18 against SC and plays a 1 deep safety coverage...Buddy Hackett, thats who...

LOL. I bet there are not 5 VN who know who Buddy Hackett was w/o Google

So what do you guys think? He leaves Tennessee and Dooley and heads to Tallahassee where he wins a NC his first year there. Was his struggle in Tennessee due to the 3-4 switch or something else?

great thread you deserve the flaming you get from this thread .....

Not to take anything away from Sunseri, but I think anyone here could be a position coach on that defense and be successful.

Seriously, I was impressed by the talent level of that FSU D.

I agree Freak. They were impressive. If anything, the LB's got schooled a little. Isn't that Sunseri's position to coach? :)

He won it for them?...wasn't in any of the recaps I read :compute:

Yeah, I love how the OP uses the phrase "he won", like SS was the catalyst. LOL.

And here I thought the whole time that Randy Sanders won it.

Truth about Sal probably lies in the fact that our talent is weak for the SEC, a new defwnsive scheme, the head coach was not very good, and he was way over his head as a DC. JMO.

When Sal was here it looked as if the 2000 Rams offense just suited up in the other teams colors every week. Troy & 722 yards!

Freak, it's even more impressive when you consider that they lost 8 starters from last season, and these are the replacements.

all those 5 star players at FSU didn't hurt him any. I still think he was/is a jerk for not simplifying his system here. With that offense , even an average defense would have equaled 7 wins and a bowl game. Course you have to add in the Dooley factor also.

Yeah, winning the east last year really would've screwed us over for years.

No different.

He's a position coach. And with loaded talent a good one, not unlike many others.
