Three 4* recruits

We'll be fine. We've got a lot of kids on the cusp of a fourth star and there are less four stars than I remember in the past. I think someone said Rivals said they would have less four and five star players this year. What is important at this point is we get everyone in that we recruit instead of having so much attrition due to failure to qualify, off the field problems, and hurt feelings (TY Mr Brown). Finishing in the top fifteen consistently will not get it done in the SEC long term but we are fine now. I think we sneak into the top ten this year in recruiting with who we finish with.

So you've thrown in the towel? You need to read this weeks "Guitar Shots to the Head".

How is that "throwing in the towel"? I am just realistic about the state of our program. We cant afford to chase after guys we most likely wont get in this class. Is that so hard to understand? If any fan thinks Dooley WANTS to sign a bunch of 3* players they are crazy. Like I said....this isnt UT of the 90's. We dont have 4 and 5* guys lining up to commit to us like we used to. To EXPECT CDD and staff to pull that off, as a fan, is ridiculous at best. He has been here a TOTAL of 8 months. Our program has had 3 different coaches in 3 years. What reason does any 5* kid have to come here when he has every other school in the country to choose from? Those kids will have plenty of reasons in the future to come to UT.......but not right now.

You can also ask Alabama, Ohio St, and LSU how good recruiting classes with 5*s are working out for them.

Ask Florida, USC, and Texas how all those 5* players are doing about now.....with all those 5/4* kids they're a 20+ ranked team thanks to all of them....not playing close to the potential of those * rankings. All the *'s in the world don't matter if their football I.Q. and coaches can't put it all together without player development as well as a great game plan/execution of said game plan by the kids on the field.

.....Don't forget Oklahoma. That way we cover all the representatives in the last 7(?) years.

Seriously?

I think in the near future we'll see numerous NCAA champs with recruiting classes consistently ranked outside the top ten. You know...in a way...the whole of college football is nothing more than a beauty contest, affected more by certain people's opinions and conference politics than on the field results, play by play. If the average college football fan realized the actual gross dollars being made by certain others in this industry, the influences, the manipulation, then "stars" would scarcely enter his peripherals. It's a dog and pony show, and is more so every year for varying reasons. I know most indoctrinated followers don't want to hear this, but the truth is your standing with those that matter, matter immensely more than any recruits stars, or even any recruiting class.

You need both obviously, especially in the SEC. Naming schools that have the talent and are struggling this year doesn't mean that you don't need the talent as much if not more than the coaching.

The quote and the following paragraph were previous posts, sorry it didn't display that way. The only part that was mine was the Oklahoma part. So yea I agree.

Sorry if that wasn't apparent.

Excellent point! It's much more than stars. Fulmer used to let talent rot on the bench waiting their senority turn. It's player development, identifying players who have potential and helping those players develop, mature, providing guidance as well as just drills. The coaches who can do that will be successful. Look at all the talent FL has but they're getting whipped left & right. All teams go through this to a point, but CDD has a good plan, taking character into consideration above raw talent. I'm not saying it isn't important but I think Dooley has the right idea/approach.

Can't speak about Scout or ESPN, since I've primarily followed Rivals for several years. However, some things to note...

-Rivals is not having the best of years. With losses in staff, their evaluations have suffered (a point that some within Rivals have supposedly admitted). Apparently, if adequate evaluation is not done, most recruits will default to a lower star rating even if they are putting up strong numbers.
-Per Hubbs, Rivals has said they will not assign as many 4* and 5* for the 2011 class as in previous years.
-Rivals has demonstrated a strong reluctance to lower their ratings for many 4* kids after the initial list is released even if other kids are performing as well, if not better. So, if there is a limited number of places at the top, it is more difficult to join the club after the fact despite performance.
-Camps seem to hold more significance than in-season performance. If recruits attend few or no camps, or have a bad experience at one, chances are much less that they will earn a 4th star.

So, in other years, a few of the 3* recruits that will not make it above a 5.7 may have earned the 5.8. But the circumstances are not as favorable this year.

I sure would like to be a 20+ ranked team.

It becomes more and more apparent each year. I'm finding it difficult just to enjoy the game now. And I think it would be a little better of a situation if Disney (ESPN) did not have a "monopoly."
