Tim Spencer

Tim Spencer is obviously a fine coach. You don't have a career like him and not be one. My one issue relates to recruiting. He has been out of the college game for quite awhile and probably was not all that locked in to recruiting in the south while at Ohio State. Not saying he could not get it done. Just see it as a really big maybe.
maybe that could be a plus for us. Having a person with ties to the North and recruits knowing his name and ties to the NFl.

Graham made modest improvements in the play of UT's RB's. He helped get North but NO highly rated RB's... NONE. The one guy who was offered a chance to stay could not recruit a single 4/5* RB to play at the position he coached.... let that sink in awhile before deciding someone else is a downgrade in recruiting.

Spencer is likely an upgrade as a coach. He hasn't recruited in awhile so that is a valid question to consider. But you suspect that a guy who has coached in a Super Bowl and coached several great RB's would have something to sell.

espn, bleecher report, fox sports, SI, and everybody else has said jay is a ace recruiter it isn't just me. all said as well that this does not in anyway help tennessee. if i had to pick between graham and spencer i would chose graham as would most of the college football world would. it is still an opinion, but i still wish jay had stayed and jones had paid him. recruiting the best players on you team is what gets you wins, we need proven recruiters in the worst way. i guess we disagree on the cincy coaches, because i truely believe they are not on the sec level. we won't know till next year, but if they are out of the top 20 next year might as well get the buy out ready. hopefully that won't happen.

From everything i've been reading, Jones was willing to pay him.

Why would we be getting a buy out ready for not ending in the top 20 next year. 7-5 or 8-4 (bowl game) is pretty much the norm for predictions for next years record. I can't see that prediction being too much different regardless of who we hired as a HC this year.

At least you dont hide the fact that you form opinions based off zero credible evidence. You are right that we will not "know" if they are SEC level coaches until they are here a couple years. For you to act like you have gathered some type of credible evidence that leads you to the opinion that they are not SEC level makes you look like exactly what you are....a joke.

Yeah. I read plenty of posts the past couple of years positing the theory that negative message board posters were to blame for Dooley's shortcomings. It was baloney then too.

If you draw grand conclusions like you are attempting, you would be correct.

If you recognize that message boards and rabid fans in general, create their own narrative that in turn makes the perception of the program change overall (especially in down times) then you will see their is a different reality.

Do message board posters make the coach "suck"? Not insofar as his ability to actually coach and inspire players. Do message board posters actually make it difficult to attract a player or two in each recruiting class? If those posts are negative enough, or the narrative is bad enough, certainly.

If you want proof...message boards and talk shows created the Gruden to UT rumor, but it was picked up by bloggers and sports analyst who started repeating the rumor and innuendo. That constant cycle reinforced what was an absolutely false premise: the UT and Gruden were in fact in talks.

Or to look at it another way: perception is largely caused by a media narrative that is, at least on a small scale, effected by fans calling into radio talk shows, blogs and messages boards. So, it really isn't either all Jones or Graham's fault, but we (the fans) have some culpability too for the stupidity we see fit to throw out into the universe.

It sounds like English...the kind used in British mafia movies like Snatch...subtitles help

You will need to dumb it down for hillbilly. That's way too succinct and intelligent.

lol, okay, let me try.

If you post stupid stuff on a message board, other people can see it.

If enough people say the same stupid stuff, other people start to believe it because it has been repeated so often.

That is a bad thing.

Is that dumbed down enough? :)

Considering your post will go right over most posters heads? No. I would not say it is dumbed down enough.

:p

Not to mention the fact that ESPN actually discussed this exact issue on NSD. According to them, it can and does have an impact on recruits and their families. Add to that the family members of recruits and players who have actually come onto VN and said the same thing, it seems to carry some weight to me.

I actually have an issue with people that come on here and say we should just put the idiots on ignore. No we shouldn't. If we all put them on ignore, the only ones reading their crap would be the recruits and their family members (because they aren't going to ignore what is being said about them....good or bad). At least if the sane folks on VN respond to the morons, the recruits and their families will see that the whole fan base does not feel that way.

Very solid post. It is REALLY important that more people understand that.

I apologize if I tend to talk over some people's head. I don't intend to.

My professional environment is such that requires more formal writing, couple that with being a law student and...well...what you see is what you get.

nope the only facts we have is what they did in a shortened year this class and at cincy. it it isn't any better next year his days are pretty much numbered in my opinion.

if he can't recruit in the top 6 sec teams he won't be here long it is just a fact. if you call offering your best or second best recruiter garbage money then yes jones tried to keep him.

I like big words myself especially when I know what they mean...that was a smarmy post...I apologize

He offered to match FL St. After he had already given him a substantial raise from what Dooley was paying him. Doesn't sound like garbage money to me.

It is still yet to be seen if he can recruit with the other SEC schools. Wether he can or not though is not going to have anything to do with wether or not he will be here after next season though. UT will NOT do another buyout for at least 3 years.

True of Michigan. Sorry. I was thinking of the drubbing they took at the hands of Bama and losses to every legit opponent this past year.

Auburn just finished a 3-9 season only two years removed from that NC. It was an anomaly created by the talent of one player.

I keep hearing that on Ole Miss... but have not seen the proof.

Not that I don't believe you but do you have a link documenting that UT matched CJG's offer? I have not seen that claim before.

Yes i do

Here is the Quote from Evan Woodberry
I'm told Jones offered him another bump to $300,000. Going much higher than that would have been impossible given the salary structure of the staff.
