If you had a football time machine and could go back to any game in the last 10 years and change the outcome of 1 play of a Vols football game what would it be and why? 2009 AL field goal? 2010 LSU 13-Men play? 2010 Music City Bowl FG? Last year's UGA Pig Howard TD/Fumble?

I would take the 4th and 1 against FL at home in 2006. I think if we stop Tebow and beat FL, our confidence could have carried over into the rest of the season and could potentially make all the difference down the stretch. A better record in 06 could've led to a better class the following year, and it could have snowballed from there. 1 yard literally could have had a huge impact on the next 7 years and MAYBE even have prevented the huge downfall from which we are just now recovering

The 13 men on the field at LSU is the most obvious answer. I didn't expect Daniel Lincoln to make that kick against Alabama in '09....To your list I would add Arian Foster's fumble vs Penn State with the game tied 10-10 in the 4th that was returned for a TD and although it is going back to '03, the last play of the 1st half against Georgia is the most deflating play I've ever witnessed in Neyland.

I would change that 4th down QB sneak by Vandy and make sure we stuffed that line of scrimmage.

I wish Butch had a chance to take us bowling in his first year.

You just took me on a history journey and ruined my morning! Such heartbreakers!

It wouldn't be a play...I would take over the plane Dooley was on when he flew to Knoxville and fly it to Canada!

This would have been a nice one to change. The lack of running game cost UT, but.... the roughing the passer call at the end of the first half still bothers me.... IIRC, it was called due a defensive lineman (which I can't remember who) tipped the pass and hit Leak's helmet in his follow-through. It brought back a Marvin Mitchell pick 6 that could have really changed the dynamic in that game. The second half of that game was like a slow death.

Easy answer for me.. 2001 SEC Championship game vs LSU. Seems like that was a directional point for the two programs and LSU went up and UT unfortunately began spiraling down.. Matt Mauck = :banghead2:

That was the first game I thought of, but it was more than 10 years ago. :)

It's a toss up for me..

The 1st Erik Ainge INT in the 2007 SEC Champ game. That could have changed the outcome of the game, and the next few years of the program.

Or

Last years fumble against UGA. The only reason I'm somewhat thankful for that play is because I believe had we beaten UGA, I think we would have lost the next game to USC. I live in SC, so I'd rather have the bragging rights of costing them another trip to the SECCG. 😎

Btw, good thread OP. I like it.

Pig Vs UGa last year. I just think we deserved that one and it hastens the turnaround Butch is pulling off.

The QB sneak against Notre Dame at the end of the half which got freshman Eric Ainge hurt. Take that away and there is no 2005 debacle and it would be interesting to see how things panned out from there. That was literally the Vol "Butterfly Effect."

I still think the 2005 defense may have been the best ever in Orange. The offense just couldn't do anything positive with the ghosts in Eric's head and it was a perfect storm of bad luck in a few games.

'05 had a lot of plays that could be on this list...Corey Anderson's fumble through the end zone vs Alabama, Arian Foster's fumble at the goal line vs South Carolina, the fake punt attempt vs Florida...Something wasn't right about Ainge in '05 but I think it may have had more to do with substance abuse than any injury - his performance against LSU in the 1st half was a well earned benching.

Easy! 2001 SEC championship game vs LSU if we won we would have played Miami in NC game. I wished we would not have injured LSU QB.

Back of the end zone pass by David green to us at home... Should have never happened as the refs screwed us on the prior play

Air Force 2006. We held on to win that one, but it would be nice to have the Inky injury erased...

And a healthy Justin Harrell....that air force was game was very brutal to us. The next game, he played some...but wasn't 100% and we lose by a point to florida.

Not 10 years ago, BUT I would like to have Manning throw a completion to Little Man Stewart on the last play of the Alabama game. Stewart was wide open! Manning was a freshman!

Not 10 years ago, but I would like to have been able to stop David Palmer on the 2 point conversion in 1993. How did Maramee not know that that was coming? Any Defensive Co ordinator saw that coming!

Game against UGA, at home. Chavis put us in a prevent defense and they scored on a pass to their fullback in the end zone.

Penn State game! Foster fumbled and the ball bounced directly in the PSU players hands for the determining score.

The S.E.C. Championship game, in which Houston & Riggs each scored on long runs but the ref's called them both back.

The Kentucky loss.

The Wyoming loss.

The 2005 Vandy loss.

The 2013 Vandy loss.

The 2012 Vandy loss.

Agree that the play against Notre Dame that got Ainge hurt was the beginning of the downfall. But I wouldn't change a thing, because all of that led to is having the best coach in the country now.
