In the 36 NCAATs since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985, Tennessee has been to 14 of them.

21 appearances in the 46 NCAATs that have allowed more than one team per conference.

22 appearances in 75 NCAATs.

I think the magic number for getting into the NIT is 18 wins.

19 wins will get us a home game in the NIT Tournament.

Considering injuries, loss of key players, and lack of talent, getting to the NIT with this team is a good accomplishment.

Next year we’ll be in the NCAA Tournament.

I think I heard that only 5x P-5s were in the NIT last year. We need the small school conference winners to also get the automatic NCAAT bids by winning their conference tournaments.

Except there were almost 5,000 at the TBA in Cuonzo's 2nd straight year in the NIT. Over 350 teams can participate. Only the top 100 can be in the NCAAT or the NIT. Making the 2020 NCAAT was always considered to be an overachievement. A team with 6 of their 10 regular players being freshmen should jump at the opportunity. 3 wins gets to the semis in Madison Square Gardens. There will be plenty of big names in the field of 32. If you don't care don't attend, don't watch, and you don't have to comment.
Maybe making the NIT is par for the course but calling it an over achievement is laughable.

If UT does end up NIT bound, would Barnes and Fulmer be willing to host games? Being seen as the lesser tournament, I know that teams can't refuse the NIT, but a lot of big schools have refused to play host. Ironically this has actually been of benefit and even given a slight edge to a number of mid major programs in the past.

I bet think that Fulmer would want to sell more of those $11 beers and Barnes would want to get his 6 freshmen experience in a lose and your season is over tournament.

Got to take care of Vanderbilt Tuesday night or even the NIT is a long shot.

Maybe UT and Memphis will play in the finals NIT. That would be a hoot.
I don’t see Memphis being motivated enough to get that far. I’d bet on them losing a first round NIT game before I would making the finals.

I heard that when Stokely was being emptied before demolition that there were a lot of artifacts just abandoned. Things like hand written written letters by Johnny Majors. Dave Hart was such an a-hole. That clown should have never been allowed on campus.
As a student fb manager in the mid 90s we helped clean out some storage rooms in Stokely. We found Coach Fulmers hs Letterman jacket and had it cleaned and presented it to him. He was pretty excited. We also found some unopened six packs of worlds fair beer!

NIT games are bad mainly because a good chunk of attending fans think they are. If you've played at home in front of 20,000 during the season, and then you're playing an NIT game in March in front of <5,000, well, that's a fair piece of how you do something like lose to a Mercer. Three quarters of your fans just told you from the tip that the game doesn't matter and it's easy to play flat. Assuming we don't make the dance, the NIT would be a great developmental opportunity for young players but I'm not holding my breath on anyone packing the house for a home game if we get one. It can be more experience, or it can just be a sour note at the end of the year, and we don't get a crystal ball.

If bad turnout affects your performance against inferior opponents then there's a problem. If anything it should make u want to blow them out to make those that didn't show up feel like they missed out. That being said playing in front of 5000 is a lot better than not playing at all. Trust me most of these kids would rather be playing that game than sitting on their couches. competing is competing.

we are UT, not Duke.... poo-pooing the NIT as something beneath us is asinine. just for reference since 2000 we have been to the NCAA's 11 times out of 20 opportunities. Before then we only had 11 appearances between 1967 and 1999. Success as a program s fairly new to UT men's BB. We have only 22 total appearances. That's almost as many as our NIT appearances (13) the best we have ever done in the NIT is third place. I think playing and possibly winning the NIT would be a good experience fo these guys. It's not the NCAA's but its playoff basketball. if it was beneath us we would have gotten booted i in the first round 4 of our last 5 appearances (the other time we got booted second round).

Not only if we beat Florida, but most importantly, if we can play 2 or 3 games with reduced turnovers, Bowden shooting well (just normal), Fulky scoring and hustling, Pons hitting 50% from the field, JJJ or Gaines rebounding and stroking a few 3s... in other words, if this Tennessee team can finally "click" and becomes fun to watch for the last few games, I think a decent crowd would love to cheer them in an NIT matchup.

But if they appear to "limp" into it... [crickets]
