TN and UConn in talks to resume series

I'm sorry, but by Tennessee standards, Sweet 16 is middle of the pack. Maybe it's good for other schools, but it shouldn't be seen as an accomplishment for Tennessee. It used to be unusual for them not to make the Final Four, so no way should we (as a fanbase) be settling for Sweet 16s...especially when the team has Final Four talent.

UConn is in the driver's seat until a.) top teams stop scheduling them in OOC and b.) they can't get into a major conference. In spite of how much we would like it, they aren't going to fade into irrelevance. They are going to a major conference; it's just a matter of where or when.

Geno was basically spitting in Tennessee's face with this whole exchange. The inference that he's even asking Tennessee to schedule them is way off. He knows UConn doesn't need Tennessee at this point, so this is all just another one of his media jabs.

Ummm, no they aren't. Football drives the bus and the ACC won't take them because of their history of trying to block Boston College... The Big Ten doesn't need another weak football team they already have a conference full of them. UConn will indeed fade just as Louisiana Tech and Old Dominion did and for the same reason though admittedly it won't happen over night and as for Auriemma not wanting to play Tenn let's not forget his nasal whine after the series was cancelled. It's Tennessee that doesn't need the series.

I expected that. It was always relevant before some entity decided it wasn't. Seems to be a good measurement to me, though.

A good measurement for what, exactly? I thought the good measurements were NC championships, Final Fours and Conference championships.

It may be relevant to you, but i don't see any banners in TBA saying, "2014 5th Hardest Schedule"

Great assessment, chief. Keep this in mind the next time conference realignment comes to town and UConn is quickly snatched up by a big conference.

Let's see there pilgrim: UConn's chances of being snatched by a big conference will either have to be from the Big Ten or the ACC. The Big Ten has already passed them over for 1) Maryland 2) Rutgers and the ACC has already passed them over for 1) Louisville...I think you are mistaken. Neither one of the two conferences needs another basketball school and UConn football is just too weak in terms of facilities, tradition, fan support and national perception to be attractive to either one of those leagues. UConn people don't get it. It's about football and they are inadequate. UCONN WAS PASSED OVER FOR RUTGERS AND LOUISVILLE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!!!!!!!

U Con.....they are a prison league team

You realize that I'm talking about the next conference realignment cycle, right? When it comes time to jump to 16 or more teams, there are three major conferences that would certainly express interest in adding a respectable academic institution with a growing football program and the country's best basketball program, especially considering a very sizable portion of the state's presence within the NYC Metro Area.

One measure of schedule difference between the teams is the Sagarin ratings. He has UConn's schedule ranked 22nd and UT's 3rd.

At first glance that would seem that UT's schedule was much stronger but that doesn't tell the whole story. UConn played 19 of the top ranked teams and was 19-0.
Of the 11 top 25 teams they played they were 11-0.

UT played 22 top 50 teams and 13 of the top 25. They lost 6 games to teams ranked in the top 50, 5 of those losses against top 25 ranked teams.

Looking at the top 50 teams played the difference (3 games) is not that significant. What is significant is that UT lost 6 of those games and UConn lost none.

Must you post your dislike of Warlick every day on every thread? We all know your feelings. Negative statements sure don't help with any potential recruits who might visit this board.
Oops. Thought this was an armchair post.

I like Holly, has nothing to do with losing to Geno

Looks like UConn's SOS should be higher, then. After reading some of the posts in here, perhaps UT should go with a fluff schedule so they can rest more during the regular season.

Or Tennessee can stop playing down to the level of their competition and stop losing games against top teams.

But hey...they've got the third toughest schedule in the country!

We'll see what happens and there is a chance UConn could get lucky the next go around but let's not kid ourselves...realignment has nothing to do with academics, basketball or the size of the market. It is about football and UConn is a tough sell where it matters.

Maybe you can hang some "but we had a tougher schedule" banners in Thompson-Bolles where there should be Final Fours.

Perhaps, you could stick some. I'm voting for a fluff schedule like some other teams. You can rest playing a bunch of tomato cans.

Funny, since playing a tough schedule was supposed to prepare Tennessee for post season. I suppose they could have played a bunch of Div IAA schools to go 36-0 before losing to Maryland in the Sweet Sixteen. Still no Final Four, but at least their average ranking should be higher...at least until the final poll. Perhaps next year...

You just don't get it, I'm afraid. Play the fluff and rest up for the big games.

Oh, I get it just fine. Make excuses instead of accept reality. Those games against Middle Tennessee, Alabama and Chattanooga really wore Tennessee out, and they had nothing left by the time they played Maryland.

An easier schedule wouldn't have helped Tennessee any more than a harder schedule would have hindered UConn. Besides, 22nd isn't exactly a cakewalk especially when you look at the names on UConn's schedule: Duke, Stanford, Penn State, Baylor, Cal, Maryland...yeah, real tomato cans!

UConn could have scheduled Tennessee 33 times during the regular season and played them 6 times in the tournament and they STILL would have gone 39-0 and averaged at least a +15 ppg win margin.

I'd rather think of ways that Tennessee can get over their inability to beat the top teams rather than make flimsy excuses for why one shouldn't be impressed with the way UConn mowed through another unbeaten season and beat all those top 10 teams like a drum whether during the OOC schedule, AAC or tournament.

You criticize UConn for playing an easy schedule--and then when they win the championship, you attribute that fact to the notion they were well rested. Is that your argument? If so, it's a dumb argument. You get into the tournament, play your opponents, and the best team(s) win. Simple as that. A team's schedule is meaningless once the tournament begins. Everyone plays the same number of games: You are either a title-caliber team or you are not.
