That's the kind of kid we want. Talent in middle TN is getting insane compared to what it used to be.The top-100 sophomore defensive back from Nashvilles Ensworth High School said Tennessee and LSU currently are standing out to him among the five schools pursuing him, and the Vols have made him feel like Im a priority for them during each of his visits to Knoxville over the past year.
Of course, LSU, Tennessee, those two are probably my top right now, Walker said during a recent National Playmakers Academy open workout at Tennessee State University. But Ill start exploring which schools right for me in the summer and spring.
I feel like they really want me to come to their program, said Walker, whos ranked by 247Sports as the nations No. 95 overall prospect and No. 8 cornerback in the 2019 class. From talking to them, just what theyre telling me and stuff, I feel like Im a priority for them.
The UT visit was really good, Walker said. I liked the atmosphere. I got to stay up there that night, too, so I got to come back the next day and stuff. I ate in the lounge with a lot of the recruits, and then we got to go in the locker room, too, so I got to talk to the players. I talked to Rashaan Gaulden and Alvin Kamara. They were just, like, influencing me to come there, (saying) its a great school, great football program. I liked it. It made me feel like I was a priority. I got to talk to Coach (Butch) Jones, and he made me feel like they want me there. He made a strong point on, like, he wants in-state guys. He wants to keep us in-state, and I do think about that a lot.
A couple years ago, they werent in the discussion to be a top-15 team, top-10 team. (I like) just the jump theyve made, he said. "Really, just consistency is what they need. They got off to a great start (this season), so they just really need to find consistency. I mean, they could be in the national championship if they had consistency.
I promise you all this kid will be prime time and a top 100 maybe even top 50 in America by his JR yr. When he 1st came to us before the Alcoa camp w saw the flashes. The thing about Wes is he is a relentless worker. He's always picking Buck and Brent Alexander's brain about how to better himself at his position.
“Well, Recruiting me the hardest has really been Tennessee and Notre Dame,” he said on Sunday. “Notre Dame dropped by the school not too long ago and they are talking to me all the time. It’s mostly about what I could bring to the class and all that.”
And while Walker’s relationship with Notre Dame appears to be growing, it seems as though the Irish – and every other school for that matter – are chasing Tennessee on that front.
If the defensive back’s college decision was scheduled for today and it was based on comfort level, beating the Vols would be tall task. “With Tennessee, they’ve just always been like family for me,” Walker said. “I’m always talking to them. I’m an in-state guy so they are always telling me they want me.”
Walker plans to visit Clemson, Notre Dame and Florida State this summer and says that, of the group, he’s in most frequent contact with FSU. His trip upcoming to Tallahassee, it seems, could very well end with a scholarship offers from the Seminoles. “FSU just keeps telling me to come camp in June, and I’m going to because I really want to go down there,” Walker said.
RIVALS REACTION: It’s early, as Walker will likely welcome in dozens more offers in the year ahead. That said, it’s hard to imagine Tennessee not being a player for the long haul. His interest in both Notre Dame and Florida State also seems real, but things can change quickly for underclassmen.
So what are the chances the 2019 instate class is better than 2018?
I ask this cause it seems like everyday there is a new highly regarded instate kid from the 2019 class that pops up.
If Butch can lock down the state in 2018 and 2019, we'll be able to field back to back top 10 classes easily given all the talent there is instate.
So if we clean up instate in 2018 and 2019 we'll be set in both the trenches and skill positions.
I think so. Especially if we can pull Master Teague (RB), this year. I haven't studied the 2019 class, but between it and 2018, the only position that seems lacking is QB and with Martinez and Penix, we should be fine.
I, honestly think, if we were able to get the top 23 players in the state of Tennessee, this year, plus the above QBs, we would have a top 10 recruiting class. I know that won't happen, but that's how talented 2018s class is, imo
if we did that we would have 1 5 star, 9 4 stars and 15 3 stars. for a total of 250.10. which would have placed us at #10 by .63 last year. I think we can do better than that though this year.
I do, too. I was just trying to demonstrate how much talent the state of Tennessee has in the 2018 recruiting class. I would like to get Litaker, Emerson, Jones, Johnson and Teague, tho. Plus, steal Davis from Bama. I have never seen a class like this in TN
"it was fun," walker said. "it was my first 'orange carpet day.' coming in, i didn't know what to expect, but it was really fun. The activities they had, split up by decision was really fun."
"they have been telling me, 'i'm an in-state guy and they want to win with in-state guys,'" walker said. "that's what they have always told me. I feel like a priority when i'm at tennessee."
and in turn, is tennessee a priority for the ensworth product? "yes, they are a high priority," walker said. "with my family, they love ut. And i'm from tennessee, so of course they will be a high priority."
walker camped at tennessee last friday before attending 'orange carpet day on saturday.' it was a good opportunity to work with tennessee coaches and get some quality instruction. "coach (bob) shoop was talking to me and adonis (otey) and telling us there is a lot of plays we can make on the field," walker said. "at camp, coach shoop brought me over and put me through some hip turns and break drills so he sees me playing nickel, corner or safety."
and as for a timeline on a decision, walker isn't in a rush, but also doesn't want to drag things out till signing day of 2019 either. "i think it's better to get things done sooner rather than later," walker said. "i think if you wait so long, it interupts your football season. I want to get it done by next year before my senior season."
That's the kind of kid we want. Talent in middle TN is getting insane compared to what it used to be.
among the teams still actively recruiting him, he said the top two that have made him a particularly high priority are probably kentucky and georgia tech. i talk to (kentuckys) whole coaching staff, all the way up to their head coach and stuff, walker said, referring to wildcats coach mark stoops. they just talk about how im their top priority at db, even though im hurt still. Thats good. I feel like a priority. i talk to georgia tech a lot. They send me a lot of mail, as well. (inside linebackers) coach (andy) mccollum and the dbs coach, i talk to them the most.
on summer visits...i know ill probably go up to ut and visit, walker said. i havent been up there since pruitts been there. (cornerbacks) coach (terry) fair was wanting me to come up to uts spring game and stuff, but i wasnt able to make it. I want to go back up there, because i dont want them to think i dont really just like ut. I want to get up there this summer.
...
On fair and sherrer...they came up here a couple times to see me, walker said. they said they wanted to see how i move. I probably wont camp this summer, though, so theyll have to just see me probably in late summer or the season. ut, i mean, i havent counted them out. Its just that i have to focus on the schools that are showing me the most attention, of course. But theyre most definitely not out of the equation as to where ill go.
