'24 TN DB Boo Carter (Tennessee)

I agree the defense needs playmakers and I'm not strongly opposed to Boo ending up there. But we potentially lose McCoy, Thornton, Keyton and currently only have Matthews and Staley committed. I'm just saying it isn't unreasonable to envision a scenario where BC might be equally as valuable on the offensive side of the ball.
In all honesty you must admit we recruited some pretty good ones in 22 and 23 so again the receiver room is not bare, and defensive backfield needs depth and talent

Right, it isn't bare. Never intended to insinuate that it was. It will just likely be very unproven. Again, I'm not opposed to Boo staying on defense. I just think he may have a clearer path and equal or better ability on offense. I think he'll succeed no matter where he plays. I hope his true size is closer to 5-11 and not 5-9 if he stays on the defensive side of the ball.

I believe we both agree wherever he winds up he will do well, but with moving Seldon to RB I think the staff is Content with the recievers currently on board. And I believe Carter is 6.0'.

Seeing him with the ball in his hands, man, it’s tempting to put him on offense. But ultimately, I’m a believer in putting our best athletes on defense (if they can play both sides) because Heupel will scheme up our offense.

I don’t feel really strongly about it either way, though. If he does end up on defense, I hope they find ways to use him in the return game and/or special packages on offense.

I agree. Curious though to the bolded statement. Where would you play Mike Matthews?

I’m all for putting a lot of the best athletes on defense because we need to get better on that size of the ball and also because I sense Huepel could make good WR’s out of a kid who can merely walk and chew gum at the same time.

Kirby pretty much does the same thing.

Puts elite athletes in the backfield.

What’s the difference if Heupel does it?

Heupel is a great offensive mind. There is no doubt about it. I know your post was intentionally hyperbolic, but I would hate for our receivers to think that we’re not giving them the appropriate level of respect for their hard work and achievements.

About 20 years ago I heard a football analyst on a talk show say that the difference between the SEC and all the other major conferences is that in the SEC the best athletes are usually on defense. I agree that is a major differentiator. I think UT hasn’t been particularly good over the last 15 or so years of doing that, and it has shown. Of course, our overall talent level has been lower over most of those years too.

Correct I meant it as a compliment to coach. For sure 👍🏻

Eric Berry was a very explosive athlete…. Glad we put him on defense

Wide Receiver. Because that’s what he is. Carter is an either/or.
I agree with WR for Matthews. It's his best position, but there were other teams recruiting him as a DB. He is as much an either/or as Carter, IMO. And you were pretty explicit that you put your best athletes on defense if they can play both sides. The same could be said of Jonathan Echols, who we are going to play at TE at his request. Most others wanted him as a DE.

Point being, I don't think it's necessarily accurate to simply say you put your best athletes on defense if they can play there. Matthews could easily play in an SEC defensive backfield, but we both agree that he is better suited at WR. Georgia, the current gold standard for defensive player evaluation, believes Kam Mikell is a solution in their defensive backfield. We want him at WR.

Go on YouTube and hit Mix 104. I’m warming up to Boo playing offense. He just made about 7 Maryville defenders look like kids trying to tackle their dad in the back yard.

I’d personally rather have that athleticism on defense. No one posts any defensive highlights. He does a great job coming up to make tackles and his closing speed helps save at least 2 or 3 extra yards, those can be extremely important; it ain’t always “flashy” but extremely important.

The kid is playing defense here.

Not sure why this debate is still going.
Thanks coach Heupal…

You don’t know anymore than anyone else on here…what you stated above is an opinion which is based on a lot of other opinions you’ve read on here…

The kid has incredible skills on both sides of the ball…it’s a completely legit conversation to discuss where he ends up when he gets here
