'24 TN DL Carson Gentle (Tennessee)

Carson will be really good player for UT and he will grow to play 3 tech. In our weight program and nutrition 30+ pounds no problem. He is tailor made for combat in LOS understands leverage has powerful hands and a bonus for Coach Heupel is you can truly use him as blocker at TE in certain situations but surprise he can catch 5 yard stop moving chains. In CHRIST Alone

So at this point we're looking at a 250 pound athlete who's effectively a championship caliber wrestler; throws the shot put; plays basketball (with the ability to block shots above the rim); and on the football field plays TE (catching TD passes), MLB, and DE against pretty solid competition.

What I'm hopeful for is that he's the floor of this DL class, because (as discussed ad nauseam) simply IMO we should be recruiting elite DL prospects like we are at every other position. BUT I think he's an outstanding prospect to be that floor, and probably underrated at this point by recruiting services like 247 specifically who usually look at things like being a multi-sport athlete, etc where Gentle checks all the boxes.

I think he and Farooq are the most underrated of our class. Carson will be a SDE and may bulk up enough to play inside. He burns a crap ton of calories with all the other sports. He will bulk up fast and is a great athlete for his size. Footwork is impeccable.

I would really like to see him be able to carry 290 and play inside.

Has zero to do with anything. Race baiting isn't gonna work hoss. He looks slow to me, it's just an opinion.
And an opinion so detached from observable facts... that it invites accusations of ulterior motives on your part.

Gentle isn't "slow". Compare him to Franklin by watching the highlights at the same time. If anything, Gentle has better feet and is smoother than the "5*"- he plays as faster or faster.

In your opinion. You left that part out.

So a serious question:
Is the recruiting designation ATH used when teams disagree about what position he would play for them, or when teams are undecided which position he will play, or when recruiting analysts determine that a player is capable of playing more than one position at the next level?

And similarly, do guys over 250 lbs. ever get the ATH designation?

A little of all of it really. Mainly if the players position isn’t locked in by their senior season of HS (i.e. a guy playing wildcat QB for his HS team that throws 5 passes a game but runs for 200yds is gonna get an ATH tag because he obviously won’t play QB in college)

And there are 250+ ATHs though they are more rare than the WR/DB/HB type of player they typically slap the label on. They’re usually a EDGE/LB/TE split in terms of position though.

I see on here that many of you really like this guy. My honest question is what’s so special about him? He looks average to me. And I realize that the coaches probably like him and that’s great. But watching his film shows nothing really good. As another poster said he looks slow. I am also a little suspect of his offer list. It’s pretty bad to be honest.

It's not enough that the coaches like him?

RG’s evaluations > Your evaluations

Carson is playing in space in high-school but will not for Tennessee. He will have his knuckles in the dirt were he excels. His flexibility and strength for his age his relentless attitude plays both sides whole game. Let him develop at Tennessee and he will be a great depth piece on DL. In CHRIST Alone

Be careful, you'll be labeled a troll if you aren't head over heels for EVERY recruit. I love our other recruits, this dude just doesn't look anything more than average. Hopefully RG can turn him into a beast but we'll see.
Pearce was unranked when we offered him. That looks pretty smart now. Maybe let the pros do their job.

This kid has been committed since July of 2022. UGA asked him not to commit because they were ready to offer him--and he told them "thanks--but I am committing to Rocky Top." But you think his offer list is suspect? Talk to any college coach about this kid. You might find a handful that would not take him in a second.

This kid has a vertical of 37". A 6'3" 250 kid that runs 4.7 40; has a 4.2 shuttle; a 6.9 3Cone/L-Cone is not slow.

When Josh Heupel asked him to commit, he said they loved Carson's freakish bend and that his quickness and ability to change direction are "elite". I would defer to CJH and GRG.

It would be great if he ran a 4.5 40, but he has never trained to run the 40. He is not going to be an EDGE. He is gong to be a SDE. He is going to weigh about 10 pounds more than he weigh now. This is the same weight as Tyler Baron. No, he does not need to weigh 290. He needs to gain 10 pounds to be ready to play next season.

As for slow--pay attention to this Jaxon and Kingsport's Big Orange Train-- He ran a 6.9 L cone the first camp he ever ran the drill. I want to make sure you understand-- the L Cone and the shuttle are the most important drills for DL/DE/OLB. Look at how many NFL combine D linemen/DE/LB/OLB run a 6.9 L Cone. Then look up why it is important to NFL coaches. Is that slow? No, it is in the top 10% in the NFL combine.

Come one man--that is like a WR that runs a 4.3. 40. Defensive linemen don't need to run the 40, they need to have extraordinary burst, bend, and ability to change direction. They offered this kid when he was 15 because he is freak of nature and asked him to commit when he was 16 for the same reason.

Here is a little experiment for you. Would you take this kid? What about you Jaxon?

6'4"
266
40-4.79
Vertical Jump 33.5’’
Broad Jump 9’ 8’’
3-Cone Drill 7.1
20-Yd Shuttle 4.14

I hope so, that is Nick Bosa at the NFL combine. Now is he slow?
Carson's 40 is roughly the same, Carson's vertical is more, SBJ is the same, Carson is 0.2 faster in the 3 Cone, and Bosa is .05 faster in the shuttle.
Bosa is one inch taller and weighs 14 more pounds --after four more years of working out. Point is--at 17, Carson Gentle is probably closer to Nick Bosa than Nick Bosa was at 17.

Come to Chattanooga and watch Carson play. Stand by the gate as he comes on and off the field. Watch him move. Watch him play against teams loaded with P5 talent. Then, if you think he is average. Fine. but you will not say that. YOu will be blow away.
Carson was one of the first committable offers TN made because the kid is going to help UT win championships, win all sec awards, and play on Sundays.

I just watched some of the highlights from this kids early senior season. How you guys can talk trash about him and call him slow blows my mind. He is smoking quick. I have not seen many if any high school kids move faster than he moves on a few of these plays --like the fifth one when he hits Herbstreit's kid in the mouth. Watch the first play. Slow?

GO TO 2:17. Is that what I am thinking it is? Is that the move another chattanooga DL made famous?

He's still working on it. Didn't knock the QB down with his blocker. Yet.
Yeah. That one probably takes a few years to get right.

Here is the link from the St Xavier game. The QB is Kurt Herbtreit's boy. He is a tough kid. #97 is a DL committed to Michigan. Solid OL/DL -good team.
