you weren't specifying D1 kids.

and bringing our class into it means nothing. What the TN high school students themselves WANT and what we actually have are two completely different things. because of what WE want, not what they want.
Its a combination of both. You don't think the kids we have committed want to leave the state they live in now?

Some kids want to get away and some don’t. There just isn’t a blanket rule you can throw out there for everyone.
wow really? I thought there was. I can say a lot of kids want to leave the area they grew up in and try something new. Not all but a lot. My only point. Carry on.

depends on what you mean by "want to leave the state"

Do I think they are tired of their state and would go anywhere rather than stay home? no.
If you mean they would go anywhere that gives them a great/decent shot at their dream job (NFL) I don't see that as wanting to leave. it just means the reasons to stay aren't as good as those for leaving.

i'll just say this and understanding that it's a completely different situation, but when i graduated HS, it never really ocurred to me to go to a college that far away from home. as big as a TN fan as i was, i was just going to to go to Ole Miss. it was an hour and a half from the house. in state tuitioin yada yada.

then my parents moved to Long Island NY.

and all the sudden i was like, "then why stay in MS? home is gone". and i went to Tennessee as a result. now there's kids that are high level athletes that know they have options, and will explore them.

the mid level guys, i can see some of those kids growing up, and just assuming they're going to go somewhere close to home, be it the state school or one w/in a couple hours of home. then they start getting offers from places they just maybe never anticipated, and all the sudden the prospects of leaving home start to look pretty good.......combine that with maybe being in a talent rich state, where the state school can pick who they want to some degree, or the lack of other in state options....

yeah, moving starts to look pretty good........

that's why its harder though to get kids out of CA, FL, TX etc...cause there are so many D1 schools, so even if your first choice isn't an option, you've got 2-3 other really good options behind it.

GA is GA and GT. SC is Clemson and SCe. and there's a good bit of talent in both states and provides opportunities for programs like TN to get REALLY good players out of states like that.

I like that post:rolleyes:. My one concern is not that UT isn't getting/going after instate talent (most don't fit what CJP is looking for), it's that a lot of the instate players don't even want to come to UT.

Tough to land guys once that Austin Peay offer comes in.

You are so very wrong. A kid growing up in the shadow of a stadium wants to get out of that shadow most of time. Have you ever left the state? People want to get away from what they have always known. Its human nature. Understand it.

well, memphis has always felt like the red headed step child of the state of TN, and the proxmity of Memphis to several other SEC schools over TN has always presented a unique challenge for us on instate recruiting.

and the mid state's growth is due to a lot of transplants moving in. so there's a good % of kids playing HS ball these days there that did not grow up in TN, their families didn't grow up there, so the attachment to UT just isn't there. that may change over time, but imo, recruiting the midstate isn't all that much different in recruiting Charlotte or Atlanta.

the rural areas, the Jackson part of W. TN, East TN is where you'll find the majority of the "want to". there's still plenty in Memphis and Nashville as well, but Nashville is a big metro area now, and in state ties just don't mean much, on the whole anyway.

and technology has made the world a much smaller place. that's just a general statement, but i do think the abiility to keep up with and follow any other football program in the country, and likewise any program to follow any kid in the country, allows for more opportunity for kids to see all the options they truly do have.

best thing we can do to help the in state recruiting....be relevant nationally.

best thing we can do is recruit NATIONALLY.

oh, don't misunderstand...we have to do that.

my line of thinking on the in state recruiting is if we're nationally releveant, the von bells and tee higgins of the world would proabbly have stayed home. i don't need mr. 4* from TN just because he's a 4* from TN. but mr. all everything that can play anywhere he wants .... yeah, give me that guy. especially if he's from TN. but you want him regardless of where he's from.

Hey, I agree. I just know of two recruits that were offered (probably not commitable offers), but said they and other guys they knew had zero interest in UT for various reasons. None of the reasons had anything to do with W/L's. Just saying. Most notable was the "culture" around the program among others.

I agree to a point I just don't see why it matters where they are from.

yeah, i'm sure the culture question is legit, especially given the transition from last year to this, and all that entailed over the last 9 months or so. i'm sure that had a lot to do with folks in both the 18 and 19 class for keeping options open.

i don't anticipate that to be the case moving forward, and ultimatley, if we do start winning, that will help us more than anything else.

I hate to say it, but the coaching search fiasco and how it was handled by everybody, hurt more than some people want to admit. I agree that with Fulmer and CJP...the culture will improve, but CJP better win or the "search problems" will rear their ugly head again.

Well that settles it. We’ll just get some GA kids and fix that culture and hit the TN kids back in a generation.

meh. haven't even played a game and i think TN fans and the culture issues we're speaking of, are largely in the rearview. and as time has gone on, i think perception wise, some of the shine has worn off, and some are even coming around to the notion that "hm, those folks in Knoxville may have had a point in doing all that".

regardless, 9 months later, it was a speed bump, and we're past it. the only way that is still an issue is if people just hang on to it, and at that point, that's a "you" problem, not a "TN" problem.

it matters in warm fuzzy places you don't like to talk about
:)
my warm fuzzy place is reserved for wins by a team of players who want to play for UT regardless of where they grew up. I am not going to pull for a kid who grew up in Nashville over one who grew up in Maine.
