Lack of Calloway and Hyatt.
Appears to have been a conscious choice to focus on getting continuity with a smaller main group. That was an adjustment in addition to the change at QB that appears to have worked. Heupel gets max credit for making a couple of in-season adjustments with huge dividends.
Lack of creativity with our TEs.
Whether it was part of the problem with Milton or something they just chose to work away from... they appeared to have involved the TE's more in the first couple of games. Considering both Warren and Fant are returning... they don't seem to agree that they were cheated out of opportunities. FWIW, they were 5th and 6th behind Hyatt in yardage. Both had more receptions and yardage than any previous year.
Lack of a consistent set of 3rd down conversion plays ( see lack or TEs)
UT was 5th in the SEC in 3rd down conversions at 44.7%... just behind the National Champs at 45.0%. In the prior year, they were dead last at 30.2%. Over the past 12 years, last year's result was second only to the loaded 2015 offense that had Dobbs consistently bailing them out (45.9%).
Payton had what 15 receptions?? Yeah 6 went for long TDs, but that's just ridiculous that a player that explosive only gets so few touches over a 12 game season...
He had more yardage last year than his career total to that point. He had one career TD coming into last year. The only thing to regret there is that he didn't have more eligibility left after finding a coach that could use his talent.
I honestly find it hard to believe that you've gone to this length to complain about the O. I don't think many if any would argue that this O was more talented than the two that preceded it at UT. The Vols were 2nd in the SEC in scoring after being 12th and 11th in the previous two years. The Vols were 3rd in rushing O with 217 ypg. In the last 12 years, only that 2015 O with Dobbs, Hurd, Kamara, and Kelly (all RB's more talented/skilled than anyone UT had this year) had more rushing yardage (6 more ypg). The last time UT had as many ypg... they had Bray, Hunter, Patterson, Rivera, et al.
What Heupel and Golesh did with what they inherited... is pretty incredible.
