'25 TN TE Eli Owens (Michigan commit)

I mean unlike those that think they need every player from inside then state that another team wants, or those that worry about rankings , or, even worse, those that worry about what the fans want.
No staff in America is like this.

This isnt 1960...

Im sure every staff makes a mistake every now and then. Or else coaches wouldnt get fired.?

Heupel and crew have been pretty good at evaluating. They just miss a lot on kids they do want.

This is a kid they missed on, period. Not because he committed to Michigan, but because he fits exactly what they need their TEs to do, but didnt even recruit him.
But jf he's "perfect for their system" but they didn't recruit him, then he probably wasn't actually a perfect fit or wasn't good enough to be recruited, despite being local. Heupel and co. know better than anyone else what is and isn't perfect for their system I would think.

Eli apparently measured in at 6 flat and is not as high up on the staff’s board as LV would hope. Weird post to make considering we just took a kid in his class who is better in every category, although it would make sense little vol wants a little guy at tight end

I am sure he will end up a good fullback for Michigan

Theyŕe both TEs but different players.

Owens fits exactly what we do offensively. Heś a good blocker out of the Hback and a very good receiver. Yeah heś only 6,2 standing straight but we have a 6,6 kid in Okoye that cant even catch a football at TE.

hes local, grew up a Vol fan.
and dont say hes not good enough, as he just recently committed to the National Champions.

it is what it is,
I said it earlier in this thread I think, but Owens strikes me as Princeton Fant 2.0. We made Fant a real weapon. I'm just bummed for the kid because I think he really wanted to play at Tennessee all things being equal.

Except Princeton was a legit 6’2

The way both play doesn't make that a concern. You arent drawing up plays for either guy to utilize their size. They are both undersized guys who could play TE, H-Back, or FB in certain situations. You aren't throwing back corner fades to either guy, so the 2 inches isn't a big deal.

Tennessee threw a back shoulder fade to Fant to draw a game saving PI call against Alabama.

Just sayin. 😉

I dont like that the staff didnt recruit him.
Heś perfect for what Tennessee does offensively with the TEs.
Great lead blocker, and can adjust to all different angles.

This staff hardly ever misses.

This one is a miss. Heś pretty good as an Edge too.

oh well...
How do you know it’s a miss?

Yes. It does.

From blocking to receiving, there is a a good bit of difference in 6'2 and 6'0.

Since we never even had him over for an official visit, I’d say he wasn’t a miss at all.
Remains to be seen.
It wasn't a miss as in we took a swing and missed. Little thinks its a miss as in we missed signing a TE who is a "perfit fit" for this system.

You’ve been around long enough to know that guy doesn’t know jack right?
Oh I'm certainly not saying he's right.
I'm just saying we don't know if it's a miss or not until the guy gets to college to see how he performs.
And even then we have a higher rated TE commit to us.
I'd rather have VanDorselaer, and obviously the staff would to, but that doesn't mean they are right (although I certainly think they are).

In most cases, I wish we'd judge each post based on its own merit rather than simply dismiss it because of who posted it. Trolls being the exception.

I have been around this site for 15 years and disagree with a lot of what LV posts, but I don't just wholly dismiss everything he says simply because I've disagreed in the past. That's a pretty closed-mind perspective to have.

Well, we are a year or two away from starting to formulate that answer.

I live closer to Alcoa than any HS. Have attended more of their games than any other, including Maryville and driving back across town to see my Alma Mater Bearden, but want to let this play out. IT is always possible this is a win/win and he made the right decision as he stated in an announcement interview. Would love to have put a damper on the long festering Randall Cobb stuff by taking an Alcoa kid, but just did not see either side all in on that outcome.

You said it. We don’t know until they get to college and perform. Yet some want to declare they know more than the coaches.

If it’s something he isn’t totally off about, then he’s regurgitating it
