'24 TN WR Amari Jefferson (Alabama commit)

It seems AJ was extremely flattered by that move where Saban had his and AJ's dining places set side by side alone and in front of all the recruits, who were seated at tables behind them, iirc the photos. It would be hard not to be, and to stay aware that the effect was calculated. I do wonder how that felt being another recruit. The photo looked like they were assigned to sit with their backs to the rest of them.

Idk what AJ is thinking. But I am guessing that made a big impression. Plus all of Sabey's negative recruiting. It seems extremely likely that Sabey (and Kirby) are major sources of the "gimmick" lie and the "doesn't prepare for the NFL" lie. I figure they spread it through media and NFL scouting contacts, which want good relations. Unstated quid pro quo. Except in many media instances where it is simole incompetence and sycophancy. It is to their advantage to get recruits to attribute differences derived in good part from top recruiting classes wholly to development. We are making huge strides in recruiting. Our development is second to none. I think worry about us is a huge part of his motivation in the case of AJ.

I’ve got to say I disagree with most in this thread. I know it’s not going to be a popular opinion but Jefferson>Wingo. They’re very different receivers but I like Jefferson’s short area quickness and make you miss ability once the ball is in his hands. Wingo brings a different skill set and I like his game as well. But I think Jefferson is very underrated by everyone except on3 and is going to be a game breaker at the next level. I also believe the coaches value him higher as well. That’s the vibe I get from the 247, and VQ guys at least.

Well we can downplay the loss by acknowledging that he is a weaker receiver than Matthews, Wingo and Staley.
How would any of us know…. We are not scouts…. Our staff and Saban wanted him really bad which makes me think they feel he is pretty special…. Luckily, wr is our easiest position to fill on the team.

Politely disagree

Nah, you’re right about the different skillsets though. Probably Jefferson is underrated (won’t be now that Bama is getting him). If between him and Wingo I take Wingo.

Amari Jefferson is a really good player and missing out would hurt quite a bit, no two ways about it. It’s both because of his ability and being in-state.

Wingo is also a good player but very different type prospects. Wingo is closer to Hyatt and Jefferson is closer to Tillman.

Any chance for a nice surprise?

This is very pertinent to the negative recruiting, which talking heads and even some few *alleged* Vols fans took up and repeated (lip sycing imo):
After practice on Friday, head coach Brian Daboll was asked about the narrative that Heupel's offense is drastically different from the NFL's. The Giants' coach was quick to silence any of the negative notions, though.

"I mean, I wouldn't say it's really that different," said Daboll. "I know everybody — I think Josh (Heupel) does a fantastic job (at Tennessee). Runs a lot of good football plays. He executed them well, Jalin (Hyatt) did. Everybody runs a different offense. It's not exactly the same, but Josh (Heupel) has had a pretty dynamic offense ever since he's coached."

In case you didn't know: New York Giants Brian Daboll hiring met with Twitter euphoria

It’s been called a gimmick since Art Briles invented it…. None of his players became stud NFL players….. it will take one of our guys dominating in the NFL for it to change.

Yeah I think Jefferson and Wingo are both studs but different style of players. Want/wanted both. Silver lining is that Matthews is by and large the best WR in the class imo and prob a top 5 player in the entire class. I think there’s still a good shot we get Wingo.

The funny thing about that is that Ainge says Daboll is the smartest offensive mind he’s ever been around, and Daboll saying that about Heupel’s offense is…kind of a big deal…

Well he just thinks Amari really fits what they want to do on offense.

Staley, Matthews and Wingo are all more dynamic athletes that fit our vertical passing game a little better to me. They look like elite athletes compared to Amari being a good athlete.

Some of us have watched and studied football a while. It's not like you aren't allowed to notice certain things.

Not to say that I wouldn't be happy with Amari. He would give us more physical type receiver while Staley and Mattews take the top off of the defense.

But Wingo's tape is insane lol

Don't think you need to be a scout to see he's a much better prospect than Amari. It's not really close.

I think his value is that he an instate kid at a school with multiple SEC-level player over the next few classes. In a vacuum, Wingo>Jefferson based on skill. But based on sway and influence with other kids we are in on, we'd prefer Jefferson.
