'24 TN WR Amari Jefferson (Tennessee)

WRs that go into the portal aren't usually the #1 WR on the depth chart.

If we land Amari, we take away a potential #1 WR from Alabama.

I don't want to wait until if/when he goes into the portal to take him away from Alabama. I want to see if he's a #1 WR, then if he isn't, he'll go transfer, play baseball, or be quality depth.

Because the portal is a great place to get plug and play linemen. Id rather get a two year tackle over a high school kid I wont know is even worth the spot for three years.

Agree-- go get one or two from the portal who are seasoned and know what they are doing... Mincey has been a nice addition.

I think we're trying.
I was just trying to figure out the logic between taking one position group in the portal, but not another. seems like in either case you should be getting a more sure-fire player from the portal than you would from high school at any position.

We get too many great WR's and we will end up losing 1-2 who want more playing time sooner... NIL and the transfer portal has changed the game. Most teams who get great to elite players better be ready to give them some playing time or they will transfer.

Right now we have our WR 2 deep pretty much together for this coming season, and next year we already have 2-3 starters unless a Matthews, Staley, or Wingo/Jefferson push for playing time. The WR room can get full quick. White, Leacock, Webb/Spillman aren't going anywhere for a while...

With that said, I really want Jefferson and Wingo would be a dynamite surprise... If we got both, I guarantee you in the next two seasons we will have at least 2-3 WR's leave...

Hey when guys transfer because of playing time often it’s because they got beat out. I can live with that somewhat

If we land four stud WRs and not too many transfers would we only go after 1-2 next year?

I have recently come to the conclusion that our short HS board for OT means we have some staked out who we anticipate to enter if we show a fast path to playing time. So I have not freaked out like SOME on here have. If we have immediate need it just makes sense to over even high rated HS guys.

its really simple math

This is our current WR room (on scholarship)
Seniors: McCoy, Keyton
Juniors: Thornton
Sophomores: White
Freshmen: Webb(RS), Nimrod(RS), Leacock, Spillman

I'm not counting Seldon because he's currently at RB and may not ever be a full-time WR.
That's a very young and not very deep WR room. If we want to make a run while Nico is here, you have to bring in as much high-end WR talent as you can in this class.
Matthews and Staley are one helluva start and we already have Leacock. Squirrel may be gone after the '24 season and '25 could very well be Nico's final season as a Vol.

you do realize it was bringing in larger WR classes that landed us in this current predicament right?

Taking three seems like a good compromise. It doesn't overload one class ensuring we have multiple transfers and have to scramble 3 years down the road when we repeat this mess.

Who from those previous larger WR classes were comparable to any of the guys we're taking about in this class? Secondly, those previous classes were brought in under Pruitt.

Yea, we will be losing McCoy, Keyton, possibly Thorton to the draft, and you never know which ones may hit the portal

Plus, unfortunately, we may need to recruit over Webb and Nimrod. Big year for them both, even if it's only in practice.

We just can't be too reliant on the portal for lineman though. It's no guarantee we will get a quality OL from the portal year end and year out.

Class retention in good cultures is what you strive for. The top teams do a good job at retaining players. Sure your going to lose a few but usually it should be because they aren’t getting playing time most of the time. You don’t want to have to rely on the portal too much. It can help you here and there but you don’t want to be dependent on it either. It’s not the glamour pool some think it is. GBO

If Thornton balls out, he could be gone after this year and you will be down 3 and adding four will only make you +1 come 2024.

if we take the 4 in this class we hope to get it is very probable one will not make it to play their senior year due to going pro early and with Jefferson playing baseball, it’s possible 2 don’t make it to their senior year.

Take all 4 and let the game play out.

I haven't heard any similar takes? Thought they were relatively high on that duo coming out of spring last year

Total guess on my part. I'm moreso saying that bc their classmate was in the 2 deep last year with 30 catches and probably a starter this year. If both play this year then ignore everything I just said lol.

Squirrel did play a decent amount but at the end of the day they don't sub a lot at receiver at all and his speed is game changing so it's not hard to see how he carved out a role despite the starters.

He did have 30 catches but 9 were against Clemson in the bowl game. I think Nimrod and Webb both end up being solid contributors or better for us.

Given their pedigree vs Tillman's coming out of HS they could be Stars once they get their shot given how this offense is so receiver friendly.

I'd be very interested to see who plays if either Bru or Keyton were to be out for any length of time, it would either be Nimrod or Webb or they'd have to move Thornton to the outside.

He's not talking about getting all of our lineman from the portal, just one or two here and there--- will always be some quality, experienced guys in the portal for the next few years while all this gets sorted and settled.
