Our rivals winning titles doesn't do anything to change the perception of the conference. Nothing. Zilch. Nada. Zero. Comprende? The Big Ten hasn't won a NC in ten years and it's still one of the premier conferences in the country.

What it does do is provide a real boost to the recruiting efforts of those teams who are winning titles. Recruits for whom we are directly competing with aforementioned rivals.

Strength of conference argument = unbelievably stupid

I comprehended what you're trying to say but you're using zero logic. If you want these conference opponents to have no validity on the national title stage then we may as well join the Sun Belt.

How has that helped us though?

I just don't get it. Sorry.

You don't want the league teams other than the Vols to win outside the league.

That makes the league mediocre.

If we want to be in a mediocre or worse league just so we can rise to the top of it we should go to the Sun Belt.

Better?

You have the personality and reasonableness of a rock.

Bama winning championships only helps Bama and directly hurts us. Even if there was some sort of effect on conference strength, which there's not, it would be beyond negligible relative to the recruiting strength gained by Bama for winning a title.

The strength of conference concept is moronic? Ask Boise, all it did was keep them out of national title games despite perfect regular seasons.

Should we join the Big East? In most years we'd be hell on wheels against Cincy and Louisville. Louisville wouldn't have made it to the national title game this year even if they'd gone undefeated. By your reasoning they should have been okay with that since we all need to hope everyone else in a league is bad.

I want Tennessee to be the best team in the best league. Is that such a hard concept to grasp? Do you want Tennessee to be the best team in a group that struggles to have another top 25 team? Florida State can manage that somewhat because of their reputation. Most teams can't.

Boise has always played in the Mountain Ahole Conference. The SEC could be down for 20 straight years and not win one national title and it would still be considered a hundred times better than the conferences Boise has played in.

Amazing, isn't it? Other SEC teams have won a crapton of national championships in a row but Tennessee's recruiting somehow still sucks! Incredible! I can't believe recruits haven't lined up to go to Tennessee because of Alabama's and Auburn's and Florida's and LSU's national championships!

I give up. Let's join the Sun Belt. We can go 11-0 and go to the New Orleans Bowl or if we're lucky maybe the one in Mobile and we can beat down a MAC team. But hell as long as nobody else in our Sun Belt league is doing anything we can beat our chests all day long.

If they win the title, it will help them sign the best ones and will hurt our recruiting.

Why don't you understand this very simple concept? This 'strength of the conference' argument is friggin moronic.

If you wanna be an SEC fan instead of a Tennessee fan then go ahead, but what a goofy damned thing to be.

If winning the NC helps recruiting so much, why has TN not won the SEC championship since winning the NC?:hi:

Except...... Except for basement dwellers like UK and Vandy who can claim that they could compete in any other conference in America, but only lose consistently because they are in the SEC. It is the one rock that both fan bases have to stand on, don't take it away. :)

But, seeing as how UK lost to the Sun Belt and Vandy beat UT, maybe that no longer holds water either.

Our recruiting was fine. We even continued to take recruits that would have otherwise gone to Georgia or Alabama or Florida for the next several years because of that BCS title.

After the NC, Fulmer got thoroughly outcoached by the better teams in the conference for the next ten years. Recruiting declined when we weren't winning, and it really declined when all our rivals won a NC.

Well if good coaching is the key, why are you worried what other teams are doing in the conference?
