I believe the NCAA office is largely funded by March Madness. It would be interesting to see the actual cost to member institutions of maintaining the huge bureaucracy that is the NCAA. These people are a big roadblock to establishing any new governing body. Take the money from the existing payroll and use it to help fund non-revenue sports.
There will always have to be a central organization to handle the rules for the conferences or the B1G just starts paying players or the SEC starts not forcing players to attend classes or the B1G and SEC simply refuse to enter a playoff that involves any other conference or Notre Dame just starts hiring players that have NFL experience or whatever.
I hate authority as much as anyone but at some point somebody has to keep it from REALLY becoming every conference or school for itself.
