Tom Smith commits to the Vols

Sanders is a pretty smart guy. He's creative as a play caller. However he was not a good leader. His teams were characterized by poor effort and mistakes. He lacked the ability to instill discipline even in the most fundamental things. Since CPF was not a disciplinary either, the combined to be poison. Cut and Fulmer were good together because Cut was a disciplinarian. He demanded and got execution from his players... Fulmer gave them "understanding".

Not doubting that he is smart, but I don't really remember him being very creative though... Maybe when they had James Banks the offense was a little bit more creative.

From 2005-2009, Miami avg'd a #12 class according to Rivals. They never finished outside the top 20 during that time.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin recruited "smart character guys". Their best class was #34. They avg'd #38. In fact, I don't believe they've broken the top 30 in this whole decade.

It only matters because Wisconsin beat Miami this year in the Citrus Bowl. The game wasn't nearly as close as the score. Wisconsin dominated physically and statistically- 430 yds to 249 yds.

In 2008, they gave our "East Champion" Vols all they wanted after finishing 4th in the Big 10.

In 2007, they beat an Arkansas team led by McFadden and Jones.

In January 2006, they beat Auburn 24-10 outgaining them 548 to 236.

They've played in 5 consecutive NYD bowl games and won 3 of them... with mostly 2* and 3* players that they found and coached up.

Good post, IMHO.

ESPN Eval on Tom Smith from Apopka, FL RB. NO AL offer FWIW.

Smith should see his recruiting stock rise during the spring evaluation period; aside from lacking great top-end speed, he is a complete back and physically ready to make the jump to the college level. Has very good size and a frame to continue filling out to the 215-pound range. A strong, downhill runner who hits the hole with good quickness and authority. What really impresses us is his shoulder lean and ability to run behind his pads for a taller back. Lower running base allows him see the cutback lanes quicker through traffic and displays more than adequate footwork and redirection skill to hit. Squares up quickly out of cuts to help power through arm tackles. Generates good downhill power and is very difficult to wrap up cleanly when he runs behind his pads. Determined runner who keeps his stronger legs and lower-body driving for extra yards; he is a finisher who can move the pile and eventually wear down a defense. Seems to consistently fall forward and gain an extra yard or two. Balance, strength and ability to break first contact as a runner are his best assets. However, he is a bit stiff through the hips and lacks great suddenness and pick and dart ability coveted in a true zone runner at the next level. Gears down and gathers some when cutting. We did not see great lateral quickness or burst to the outside to become a perimeter threat versus faster pursuing college defenders. Projects best in downhill schemes but would still lack to see a bit more initial explosiveness. Our main concern may be his adequate top-end speed and difficulty trying to separate in the second level; appears to be a short-stepper without a second gear and great acceleration. That said, Smith is well-rounded and does a lot of things good not great. Will need to polish blocking skills but he is a potential three-phase back at the next level with his ability to move the chains on the ground and as a pass catcher in the screen game.

Nice. :good!:

Your model for our recruiting is Wisconsin? My, how far we’ve fallen.

Thrilled to get the recruiting ball rolling. Great job CDC and Co. Haters will always hate

IIRC, Wisconson who offered Smith has put more RB's in the draft than UF and a number of other schools that get the blue chips. They found PJ Hill as a 2*.

You can't really tell from youtube highlights what kind of competition a kid is playing against but two things stand out in the video earlier in the thread. He's very difficult to tackle... and if he isn't fast then his competition in central FL is slow, super slow, and still.

Yeah, I was just talking about Dayne's size. He weighed like 260-270 lb coming into Wisconsin. This kid is coming in at 205 lb. Big difference.

"Actually in Kiffin’s first class, this guy would be our lowest rated commit (though I expect him to end up a low 4 star). And that class didn’t have any 2 stars either."

You sir, are the official Screwdriver of The Box. Listen up Phillipshead.......it's over, Kiffin is gone and on probation....GTF over it.

Thank you.

what if he don't show it on the field. we are not suppose to be very good this year and that is something i agree with most about. i'll be the first to admit i'm not a patient person, but a decade has passed and there hasn't been 1 SEC championship for us. nor does it look like one is coming anytime soon. hell i would like to see us win one again before i croke.

More brilliance. What if frogs had wings?

Thanks for the advice...

I coach in Orlando and have seen this kid play and he is the real deal. He also comes from a school that produces a ton of good athletes, we want to have a relationship with this school. Be on the look out for this staff to offer a RB out of Boone High school this fall, he has the fastest 100m time this year in the nation as a soph.

Thanks for posting and welcome.

I posted it befoe and I post again Dooley will sign at worst a top 15 class all said and done in 2011. Just give peace a chance....

I am VERY excited with this get.

It's not everyday you get a guy who can run for 1,670 yards and 27 TDs in 6A FL.

Very good get.

First off this is a damn good pick-off for Coach Dooley. What you have to remember that this year the state is very loaded with running backs with prospects like Mike Blakely, Mike Bellamy, Marlin Lane, Dee Hart, and so on. I would say Blakely is the top big back but Tom Smith is the right there behind him.

Also, for those star gazers or ranking lovers I'll make a prediction that by the end of the year this kid will be inside the top 35 of overall prospects in the state. I'll also say it would surprise me if he wasn't a four star by the end of the year. I love his running style, very fluid.

That's great and all, but it only works when you have an entire month and change to prepare. Check some of Wisconsin's losses in each of those years. And it's not just that they coach up athletes. Yeah, they'll get a Ron Dayne here, or a PJ Hill there, but it's because their OL are so massive. It's easier to find diamonds in the rough up there, because nobody is looking for them in Wisconsin, Minnesota or Iowa. That's fertile ground for OL. Always has been, always will be. But nobody looks there, because the HS football isn't "sexy". Look, not only at Wisconsin, but Iowa, too. They take guys that fit a philosophy, not a star quota. They're big nasties. Rugged guys. It's a different world, and for one game they can show out, but for the balance of an entire season, I don't think that style, that philosophy is a winning one.

It's pointless looking at the Wisconsins, the Iowas, the Boise States of college football. It's a different recruiting world entirely. Our situation is unique. That said, I still think Smith is a great pickup, but I bet you we'll have to fight off Georgia, Georgia Tech, FSU, VT and UNC when he shows out this year. That's an inconvenience those other schools don't have to deal with.
