If nobody's sick of this topic yet, I'll add my :twocents: as I've been an Austin TX resident for the past 4 1/2 years.
I'm not a Longhorn fan or supporter, I'm VOL to the core, but these are my observations being very close to the subject.
Texas is a huge university, about 66% bigger than Tennessee. This results in more alumni who contribute $ and buy merchandise. The fact that we are as close to Texas in terms of revenue speaks volumes for Tennessee fans loyalty. Basically our fans buy more merchandise and contribute more $ per capita than Texas fans.
Texas has crazy resources as mentioned above. In addition to the population, alumni, and high school football, the corporate sponsorship is huge. Many Fortune 500 Companies are in Texas. Fortunately the $ get split between many universities as well, whereas we get a bigger % of what corporate sponsorship we do have in Tennessee.
Texas fans whine and b!tch even more than we do - you should have heard the Applewhite v Simms debates around here.
Many Texas fans have an unusually high esteem for themselves resulting from the bigger is better complex, i.e. we are a big state with a huge population and arguably the best high school football, therefore we are the best.
Most Texas fans are respectful of us sharing the same color and a similar logo - they acknowledge us as a legitimate powerhouse, but they won't acknowledge we're superior... although most acknowledge our game day traditions and stadium are better.
There are several ways to deal with the ornery 'horn, remind them that we are the original UT by nearly 100 years, that without Tennessee there might not be a Texas, and if you really want to play dirty, ask them about the last time they won a Championship. We picked up a lot of respect last year with our man-handling of A&M.
