Top 5 all-time QBs (SIAP)

I need to get some glamour shots done of it, make it look professional, maybe even let him wear a top hat and mini bow tie. Chicks dig classy **** pics.

In conclusion, I am not trying to diminish the accomplishments of Joe Montana and the 49ers. However, let me pose this hypothetical question: If Montana had been drafted by the Dolphins and saddled with the organizational handicaps which burdened that franchise, where would you be inclined to rank him in this debate?

Sorry if I misinterpreted your reference to defenses...my point was that passer rating is a measure of QB performance that is independent of the his own team's defense.

Continually playing catch-up from being behind may work both ways for the QB--gives him opportunity to pad stats--or opportunity to pad his INTs...

I've watched Manning fail in the fray of better competition many more times than I have Montana--or Brady. (And I'm not talking about W-L records).

You know--Manning's BEST performance for me was when he led the Colts to come back and beat the Patriots in the AFC championship game in Indy the year the Colts won the SB...

Now, to answer your hypothetical about Montana. I don't have to compare him to the Dolphins--just look at the dismal shape the 49ers were in when he was drafted.

They had only won 31 games in 6 seasons before Montana showed up--and proceeded to go 2-14 in Montana's first year (he wasn't the starting QB).

On the other hand, the Colts had won 42 games (and were in the playoffs 2 of the 3 years before Manning was drafted--in '95 they were just 4 points from being in the Super Bowl) in 6 seasons before Manning was drafted--and only won 3 in his first year, and he was the starting QB.

Clearly--it may be argued that BOTH Manning and Montana were drafted by bad teams--but Indy's situation was better than the 49ers--at least the Colts had been in the playoffs in their recent history.

But now--is Montana to be considered less for the mythical GOAT than Manning because his GM and HC built a better team around him that Manning's GM and HC? Certainly not.

If Montana would have gone to the Dolphins in 1979 I certainly believe that the Dolphins would have won at least 2 if not 3 Super Bowls from 1981 to 1984 (David Woodley got them into the SB in 1983, and Don Strock almost got them there in 1981).

If Manning would have gone to the Dolphins in 1998--they would have been a lot better than they were for sure--and maybe have gotten into the Super Bowl....

Like I said earlier, EVERYTHING else being equal--I would choose Montana...but I would feel guilty for not choosing Manning....:peace2:

1.) Manning
Daylight
2.) Brady
3.) Montana
4.) Marino
Daylight.
More daylight.
Everybody else.

No way Brady is #2. Can't argue with the rest of your list. I would say Brady is top 10, but I would put him more in the Troy Aikman category.

Sterling Sharpe is better than any receiver Manning has every had. Freeman is probably better than Wayne or Harrison as well.

That's just asinine. Harrison is a first ballot HOF and Freeman can't hold his jock IMO.

No Bart Starr,5 time NFL champion won the first two super bowls and was mvp of both. Only downside is he is a bammer, but was there before the bear.

I considered Starr and Staubach, but Starr's numbers just weren't comparable. Again, different era I know, but since I didn't watch him play I don't have much to go on but numbers.

I think it's pretty awesome that John Madden is posting on VN. Not everyday that you get a Hall of Fame coach posting on the board.

You're right - having a first ballot HOF, who STILL holds a number of NFL passing records, ranked as the greatest QB ever is just absurd. Favre's not my favorite QB or player of all-time, but any UT thread that doesn't have Peyton as the savior of the world and the next president gets flamed.

I saw Starr play many times. I was a fan of the Packers then. Starr executed what was required of him, but he wasn't the primary reason for the team's success. He didn't mess up often, and he was very cool under fire.
