Top 5 greatest American rock bands

Janis Joplin performed at Stokely Athletic Center in 1969. It was a fantastic concert.

She liked playing to college crowds. Makes sense given her age at death.

Also how in the **** did I leave Bob freakin Dylan off the list. Wow

Edit: OK I officially give up. I could never pare the list to 5.

Before I leave though I have to give a shout out to Chris Cornell... love his voice.

Didn't know other people liked the Band? Have you never seen The Last Waltz? Easily the best music documentary ever, with a long list of crazy guest appearances. Personal favorite part is the Neil Young guest spot while a huge coke blob is hanging from his nose.

Great documentary. I don't know how the Band isn't more well-known. They're legends in their own right, but on top of that they helped Dylan transform his sound.

Levon's voice is the best in rock history, in my opinion. I just love the power and grit.

This thread, for me, highlights the fact that most of the greatest bands are not American.

Alice in Chains

Guns n Roses
Avenged Sevenfold
Skid Row
Rise Against

Probably would be classified as more of a personal favorite list as opposed to all-time but these are the bands that first came to mind for me.

This was just bands right? I dunno that anyone but the Allman Bros make the list if I get to include solo acts.

Greatest American bands?
The Allman Brothers is my #1 pick. They created a new genre. 50 years strong. If you never had the pleasure of seeing them live, well you missed one of the best.

And no one mentioned The Grateful Dead, really?
Some of their fans think they're still on tour ;)

I'm an old guy now that happened to be in the right spot at the right time for meeting some folks listed on here.

Met Levon Helm in 1977 in Little Rock, AR. He banked with my employer. Good guy. Met Gregg Allman and the rest of the band in St. Louis at Kiel Auditorium in 1981 I believe it was. Had breakfast together with them the following morning at the hotel. A first cousin on my ex-wife's side was in the band. Got to sit back stage at that one. Gregg was going through a sober period. Dickey and the rest of the gang were not.

So my #1 and #2 are The Band and The Allman Bros Band. Loved their music before I met the guys. Was not a fan of the ABB's music when the cousin was playing for them, but it was an interesting time. My next faves are The Eagles, Bob Seger and the SBB, and Chicago. If I could squeeze in Tom Petty I would.

Trying to be objective as I can, which isn't very much :). In no particular order:

1. Metallica
2. Pearl Jam
3. Aerosmith
4. Tool
5. Alice in Chains

Soundgarden just on the outside looking in.

Alice in Chains
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Stone Temple Pilots
Soundgarden
Metallica

If Scott Weiland wasn't such a jackass, STP would probably be huge. They were one of my favorite 90s bands and I even still like their later stuff, but my goodness he can't let a good thing keep going.

The Velvet Underground (one of the most influential bands of all-time that almost no one who isn't in a band ever listened to)
The Ramones
The Allman Brothers
Nirvana
Skynyrd

If the list had been "artists" instead of "bands", Prince and Bob Dylan would be in the top 5.

That's because most of Weiland's brilliance was fueled by heroin

Velvet Underground is the hipster no one listens to but me band. I just don't care for them. I have lot of Lou Reed solo stuff, but I thought VU was always overdone.
