Velvet Underground is the hipster no one listens to but me band. I just don't care for them. I have lot of Lou Reed solo stuff, but I thought VU was always overdone.

If you like Reed's solo stuff, then you'd like the Velvet's 3rd and 4th records. His solo work is just a continuation of those styles. Reed altered the band's direction after John Cale left.

Their first two records are inaccessible, but if you listen to them a few times, it's not hard to see that they inspired everything that came after.

Greatest American bands?
The Allman Brothers is my #1 pick. They created a new genre. 50 years strong. If you never had the pleasure of seeing them live, well you missed one of the best.

And no one mentioned The Grateful Dead, really?
Some of their fans think they're still on tour ;)

Before the Allman Brothers reached the big time they toured the South at many small venues and I was fortunate to attend several of their concerts. The best Southern band of all time.
