We give up a lot of yards between the 20s but we're very respectable in the Red Zone and tough against the run. Our front 7 is getting better every game at bringing pressure. Don't quote me but I think Little Stetson will struggle against our D.

That's not the only reason. We made AR look like Cam Newton or Tim Tebow ffs.

I'm FAR from a negavol but the fact of the matter is Martinez has not leda good secondary in a very long time.

Ask UGA fans. They loath Willie Martinez for good reason.

Let's not be in denial about this fact like we were about the Pruitt and JG situation at first.

It's definitely a proven weakness and one that needs to be fixed during the off-season asap. And it's not just because of talent and our offensive scheme ffs. 120th to 130th pass defense ranking should never ever happen....even if they are all low 3 stars out there. That falls on coaching. What's the definition of insanity?

Repeating the same mistakes over and over and expecting different results. Martinez is garbage.

Don’t waste your time. You will hear nothing but excuses like we don’t have talent in the secondary or because of our offense our pass defense is bad. I guess teams like Middle Tennessee State, Central Michigan, Ball State, Bowling Green have better talent in their secondary than we do.

Our pass defense was bad last year and is worse this year. It can’t be coaching though. I mean Martinez should not be expected to take the talent he has and coach them up. Nah. We expect every other coach to do that but not Martinez.

The defense is:

1) concentrating on stoping or controling the running game as much as possible so teams cannot hold the ball all game
2) having DB play not to allow the 'big play" (and have done a pretty good job with this)
3) facing opponents who are throwing like 50+ passes a game
4) playing 2nd team guys for the most of the last 2-3 games

Im like to see a few more INTs but in the end, its points, not yards allowed that determine the outcome of games

Maybe you should stop pretending like it’s our duty to run off coaches we don’t approve of. If Willie was garbage he wouldn’t have spent the past decade in the SEC. Heupel knows what he’s doing.

Yards per play and points are the correct stats to look at. We’d all like them to be better but two things weigh in yds per game. One is that opponents have the ball longer. Second teams throw more against UT trying to catch up.

The latter is a good thing. UT is dictating the style of play. If there is a weak link then it is probably Banks and not Martinez

Numbers were inflated because FL came out emptying the barrel. The defense made enough stops to win the game. AR made some throws in that game that he has yet to make again. AR was on that game....it happens. We played zone and he was able to find the holes.

If there is a game this year which showed what makes AR special, it was against UT (of course). UF simply expects to win. It is the same team mindset we have against UK.
AR has yet to show consistency but all the raw talent is there.

Our defense has faced great talent and great teams. We are playing to our strengths and making it with patchwork.

With the way our offense plays, we're going to give up yards and particularly passing yards. We're ahead most of the time and might be playing off of the receivers, trying to not get beat deep. We are going to lose the Time of Possession every game.

The better metrics that I would care about would be Scoring Defense, Red Zone Defense, 3rd Down Defense, and rushing defense. I think we rank pretty well in all of those categories.

Just my opinion, but I think that if it doesn’t improve, atleast a little next season, Martinez has to go. If the secondary still struggles but raises the ranking 40-50 spots, then he’s the right guy for the job as the recruits start to come in.

We also played the 4th quarter to prevent the only thing that could beat us from happening, quick TDs. People hate prevent defenses but they have their place. Forcing teams to use up the clock when you are up like we were is not dumb. They got lucky with multiple 4th down conversions and an onside kick and it still wasn’t enough

We play in the damn SEC. Most of these offenses and QBs are NFL personnel. The defense hasn't been great, sure. But it's a defense designed to give up yards between the 20s and stiffen up in the redzone. Holding teams to FGs is a massive win when our offense can put up 40+ quite easily. This defense doesn't need to be a "lock down" defense. Just good enough to get teams off the field and get our offense back out there.

This is the metric that matters most. Total yards, points per game, etc fail to account for the extra possessions we give opposing offenses by scoring so fast ourselves. Mind me asking where you found this ranking? If we can get to a point where we place in the top 10 n that category I’ll feel like we should win the natty. Assuming the offense keeps clicking along

Total defense ranked 105th mainly because of our secondary

Really the only stat that matters for the defense is scoring defense. We are ranked tied for 52nd at just over 23 points per game out of 131 teams, so a little better than average. A lot of those yards we give up are between the 20's. See LSU - 300+ yards passing 13 points. We should and want to be better but there are 78 teams that give up more points per game than we do and most didn't play Bama's offense. When Saban turns them loose you saw what they could do. If you take out Bama's 52 we would be inside the top 20 at around 18 points per game. Get our injured and suspended DB's back and my guess would be no one scores more than 20 on us the rest of the season other than maybe Georgia.
