Total defense ranked 105th mainly because of our secondary

Willie Martinez is the biggest weak link. I know we are low on talent there but this is inexcusable. We would literally be LSU 2019 good if not for that one weak link.
Secondary is garbage. Is it because of coaching or talent! I'm gonna go with talent.

So, we’re saying our secondary is crap because we force people to throw the ball more. So does that mean our run defense isn’t as good as ranked because we force people to throw the ball?

I know Tennessee struggles in the secondary but at the same time aren’t those stats inflated due to the opposing team getting a lot more possessions against Tennessee due to the pace that’s played?
The speed with which we score has zero bearing on how good our defense can be.
Once we've recruited a four and five star defense, then we will have one. Until then we won't. There is no rule or law that says a coach can't recruit a top level offense and defense. The crazy part is we don't really have either (from a raw talent perspective) right now. We are winning with our coaching staff to a large degree. The future is big.

59th in yards per play. Which is not bad at all when you have the best offense in the country. I've said it several times, but I don't mind repeating: three more top flight defenders and we're on Clemson (Venables era that is) level. Top ten in turnovers, sacks, and TFLs year after year.

maybe, but some of those guys been around 3 to 4 years. at some point people have to realized they havent improved because they havent been taught how too

Yeah, but remember they were mostly 3* recruits which is an absolute crap shoot trying to get them to SEC caliber

So you think we have the talent in the secondary that LSU had? Who in our secondary is the equivalent to Kristian Fulton and Derek Stingley Jr.?

We certainly have better talent than our 130th pass d would suggest. Yes.

Let's not be stubborn. Martinez led secondaries tend to be really bad of late.

Do you guys remember how much we blamed talent during the Dooley, Butch and Pruitt days? Then income Heupel and all of a sudden that "lack of talent" isn't a big deal. A good coach will make average talent look good while a bad coach will make it look abysmal.

These numbers are so skewed. I agree our secondary is weaker but with the T.O.P and how quickly we score, your asking a lot from the defense. Injuries don't help but even being at full strength, it still wouldn't look pretty.
Definitely. Also think JH is purposely playing bend don’t break D…keeping the ball in front of us and avoiding big gash plays and making teams execute down the field and make them kick field goals, knowing we win if opposing team kicks field goals…that part has largely worked. We are also weak at DB, but let’s not pretend we have our roster where JH wants it in Y2 of an ahead of schedule rebuild. Pretty much every other unit on O and D is playing above expectations. Our DL run D and QB pressure is another big reason we are undefeated…major props there!

Our blitz packages are awesome and have helped us win games and protect the secondary.
