Total Solar Eclipse - August 21, 2017

Just returned from a quick trip to the Maryville Walmart. Lots of people setting up in the parking lot. One car had New York tags.

Couldn't you say the same thing about a football game if you didn't care about football? I admit that it is an interesting reason to travel and not something I would do, but then again I'm not a stargazer. I am excited to see how surreal the atmosphere is.

At least a football game lasts longer than 2 minutes.

Fair point. That said I still feel bad for my notre dame fan brother in law who went all the way to Miami to watch their doors get blown off in minutes by Alabama.

Admittedly, when you include the time that at least part of the sun is covered, I guess it does last for a few hours, which is comparable to the length of a football game from kickoff to final whistle. Although the real hardcore people say a partial eclipse is nothing. And there are some places along the total eclipse path that would be cool to make a vacation/long weekend out of, so I can see that aspect of it too. The superlatives that people are assigning to this go far beyond what people say about a football game - even the Super Bowl - it seems a little excessive.

But people really seem to be freaking out about it - schools closing (can't you just let them outside when it happens?), towns overrun, etc...just seems overdone to me.

Western Kentucky Parkway heading toward Hopkinsville...reports are it looks like downtown Nashville traffic. License plates from all over the country; even Canada.

Because Butch puts such emphasis on eye discipline, I expect zero eye injuries from the football team today.

I came back home for moms 75th bday. We're staying a couple extra days to be in totality for 2:36 seconds here in St Joe, Mo.

Lots of Tx, Ak, and Tn tags in town. Quite a big deal for my hometown.

I don't know why one in TN would drive to MO when there's plenty of places in TN that will be in the totality area (and closer).

Plus MO sucks :) (says the guy with a degree from Columbia College).
