Tournament Expansion 96?

I agree - horrible idea. I wish they'd poll basketball fans on this.

I wonder if they're doing this to kill the NIT, because that's basically what would happen. Look at the CBI and CIT --> between the two of them, that's the new NIT field.

To me, the NIT got a lot more interesting when they finally drew up a bracket with seeds, rather than selecting match-ups after each round. The old format made the NIT difficult to follow. I find the NIT to now be an interesting undercard event. It's as if the NCAA saw this and decided to quash the NIT by taking their teams.

Hope not. Show me a format that doesn't suck and ill consider it, but right now, its perfect. The only drawback I have with the current format is that it goes by so quickly...beware the ides of march

The worst thing they could do is make it a long, drawn out affair like the NBA and NHL.

I wouldn't have a problem expanding up to 72, where each 1 and 2 seed would play the winner of an opening round game, but that's just me...:twocents:

So stupid. The NCAA already has the worst imaginable "playoff system" with college football and now they want to mess with what most feel is the best format in sports. :mf_surrender:

I'm sorry to say ,but baseball is third fiddle in America now behind football and basketball.

There is growing talk of expanding the tourney to 96. It likely will happen starting 2011. NCAA meeting April 29 is when we should no. I hope to GOD it does not happen. The tounament is perfect the way it is. Why do they assist on srewing this up? You will loose the great cinderella upsets in the first round while the big boys get a buy and two little guys have to fight each other before playing a Kansas. Plus it will demenish the Office Pools and the regular season. Any 500 team from the BCS schools will now get in and ............ Please leave the tourney the way it is! Your guys thoughts -
:eek:k::crazy::banghead2::furious3::bash:

It's hard to take you seriously when you're in such dire need of a spell-checker.

You don't water down a product and expect it to get better. I absolutely hate this. There's a reason so many people watch the selection show that Sunday night.

(and, yes, the spell check would've been a good idea)

It's going to be 32 teams or nothing. That's the only thing that will result in another full weekend of games meaning more TV revenue. It's the college presidents pushing for expansion for that reason.

It would also mean the top 32 seeds would likely get a week long bye giving them almost 2 weeks between conference tournaments and their first NCAA game.

More proff that The NCAA is one of the worst run organizations in America, and that it is run by a bunch of money-hungry politicians who don't have a clue about collegient sports.

They refuse to touch the most pathetic thing in sports (college bowl system) and choose to continually mess with one of best things in college sports (NCAA b-ball tourney).

If college baseball ever gets popular, be prepared to say goodbye to all things good there too.

With 96 teams, making the NCAAT will no longer be an accomplishment. It will be just like making a bowl in football....means nothing.

Maybe this will lead to football playoffs. Can't argue the "too much missed class" line if they do this.

I like more teams in. Another week of March Madness won't kill it.

NCAA mulling expansion to 96 teams - College Basketball - Rivals.com

I can't believe their horrible plan for scheduling this. I figured they'd play the opening round (64 teams without a bye) on Tuesday and Wednesday, so you'd be down to 64 teams going into Thursday - so you could then proceed with the schedule that's been in place since 1985. Teams without byes would be looking at Tues-Thurs-Sat or Wed-Fri-Sun to reach the Sweet 16.

The drawbacks there are 1) little time to fill out your bracket and 2) really bad attendance at that first game. Who's going to take a week off work for that, I wondered? Will a ticket book for an opening site force you to buy all three rounds?

It turns out that the NCAA has an even worse plan. The teams without byes would play on Thursday and Friday. Is that to make things easier on office pools??? The second round (current first round) would be Saturday and Sunday. Then, they're talking about taking Monday off and playing the third (currently second) round on Tuesday and Wednesday. It seems to be up in the air on whether that third round would be at the opening site or at the site of the regionals. If they use this new schedule, and the game isn't in a city very close to me, I won't consider attending anything until the Sweet 16. Anything else is not feasible for the common fan.

Who's going to burn a week and a half of their vacation time and pay the travel expenses to watch what is currently just the first two rounds, plus essentially a play-in round?

One upside to expansion - Tennessee has the longest active streak of making the field of any SEC team. We'd be in virtually no danger of losing that distinction in the foreseeable future.

Jim Delaney is a joke. He's one of the loudest voices against a football playoff but will sign off on expanding the basketball tournament, despite similar concerns like missed class, diminishing of the regular season, and travel burdens on the fans.
