Trade Wars and Tariffs

Y’all remember when democrats were panicking and screaming this morning that Trump was going to cause a Global Economic Collapse. But all that really happened was He negotiated for stronger border security to help prevent the flow of dangerous people and poisonous drugs into our country?

That was awesome!

Hold on a second. Let's focus on the point of issue first. The tariff is about "defense spending" and trade "skewed in their favor"? How do you know that? Can I surmise that the reason to impose tariff is the arctic vortex that originated from northern Canada? Canada did nothing to mitigate its hazard so it reached the US in full force and caused so much damage? All jokes aside, I am just going off the official WH press release: "PRESIDENT TRUMP IS KEEPING HIS PROMISE TO STOP THE FLOOD OF ILLEGAL ALIENS AND DRUGS". It mentioned nothing else as the reasons to impose tariffs. If illegal aliens and drugs are the issue, let's look at the facts about how they flooded from Canada, or did they? Then let's look at how reciprocal the imposed tariffs are.

Our trading BFFs have nearly a trillion dollar trade surplus with us. Canada’s share is pushing $50 billion. AND they’re 10s of billions short on their defense spending commitment.

Just because they’ve said they’ll work on securing the border doesn’t mean they’ll follow through or meet other promises. When trade is skewed, it creates a reason to expect something in return.

I saw him manufacture a crisis for no reason and seek to sink the three nations into recession only to see the stock market freak out about it, gas futures rise, and him "pause" them after the other two agreed to a dog and pony show to placate the massive baby in D.C.

Creating then fixing your own problem isn't leadership. And "negotiating" through threatening to destabilize then take over your closest trading partners? Just stupid. Insufferably stupid.

Arguing trade numbers dollar for dollar is dumb, imo.

It's not Canada's fault that US oil companies refuse to build refineries to handle our crude, nor is it Mexico's that US auto manufacturers choose to import the engines for their cars from Mexico using parts made in Canada.

Arguing over trade surplus/deficits as if the nations, themselves, are buying and selling is just such an oversimplification of global trade. The US has a deficit because US companies made a decision to to business outside of the US, INCLUDING TRUMP, and we don't have the goods to produce and sell.

"They've been very nasty" or whatever he said....for them following THE DEAL HE STRUCK WITH THEM LAST TIME AROUND.

...except that the tariffs weren't what moved Palantir's stock. That was their after hours earnings release.

They were having a steadily good day after the tariff walkbacks were announced. The earnings report was what caused the massive spike, but they were doing well before that.

RDDT treated me well today. AAPL and NVDA still *****ing the bed aka going on sale.

As opposed to allowing the actual crisis of fentanyl flowing in and an invasion at our southern border.

Good take Guy!

It’s the liberal cult that’s prevented refineries to be built that can handle the light sweet that we’re exporting because we don’t have the capacity. Trump will address that as well. Maybe he’ll negotiate better prices with Big Pharma on TDS treatments as well.

Also, addressing a TRILLION DOLLAR trade deficit is hardly “dollar for dollar” and believing otherwise is what’s dumb.

I'm a big fan of Palantir as a company, and booked huge percentage gains on that stock myself. However, that stock's valuation was already insane even before the 22% run-up in after-hours.

Not going to lie, when I first bought them last year, what made them stand out of a long list was their name. I'm a huge Tolkien fan.
