Someone from HR must have busted your ass for something. You have way too much anger about this topic.
Management and HR are advised by attorneys and create employee policies that are compliant with current laws. People like you who belch out DA opinions are compliant with Fox News.
Busted by HR - that's a no. I just found HR to be a monumental waste of time and space. Never helpful in solving anything ... simply a bureaucratic hindrance.
I'm happily ... very happily retired, and have been for years. Long before this particular BS came up. Maybe that's the difference. We viewed the workplace as that - a place to work, and that doesn't mean there wasn't some socialization during work hours ... that's always gone on.. Apparently it's changed more to a place to keep millennials happy after they graduate from kindergarten than a place of business.
Who do you think did your payroll, benefits and processed your bonuses/raises? The magic paycheck genie?
They've also been the people who screwed that stuff up, too. I've had good experiences with HR in some places, and not so much in others. I fully realize it has a lot to do with the organizational culture. For the most part, I see organizations like HR as the generator of nonsensical forms and not overly helpful in resolving their use ... about like the IRS once a year ... tolerable if there are no exceptional circumstances. I was pretty much a support organization, too; but with the responsibility for diagnosing and resolving problems in nuclear plants to keep them running and keep them safe. The plants were the customer/client and my number one job was to do what they needed, but most corporate support organizations don't quite seem to see it that way when it's another part of the company.
An example, of how frustrating bureaucracies can be. Imagine your job is a bit like the neighborhood fire department when it comes time to do budgets, and those are to be done like a corporation based around projects with specific deliverables, timetables, etc. Now ask yourself how someone who responds to emergent issues is going to define what projects are coming up, what resources they require, etc. My smart ass kind of answer was that if I knew what the problems were going to be and when they'd happen, we'd find a fix before they became a problem. But just to say we historically resolve X number of major problems, Y number of several others, we had Z hours of overtime with current staffing, ..., so we can project this in terms of staff, instrumentation, expendables, etc wasn't acceptable. The staffing ... number and type, how you get them, qualifications, pay, etc are definitely where HR becomes a problem.
One example, I had a position to fill, so naturally that required a job description. I wrote a job description that would have required an MS in engineering with significant experience. HR - "we don't think this requires an engineering degree" "Wait, you what????" Then a little cooler "Then what do I need to tell you?" "We can't tell you that." Classic style of bring me a rock management ... we don't know what we want but perhaps we'll recognize the right one when we see it. And we aren't even talking military ... that goes to a whole new order (or completely jumps the tracks) on Luther's continuum.

I've never met a lgbtq that wasn't in some kind of psychological distress. Controversial statement, i know, but this is from all my interactions both professionally and personally since high school.
