'19 Transfer DB Quincy Riley (MTSU)

Really have to hope that we passed on him due to knowing someone else, with whom they've had back channel conversations, is about to jump into the portal and come here. Otherwise passing on a ballhawking All SBC with 3 years to play makes zero sense.

If we just got beat by Louisville....then I'd like to ask why we've now been beaten out by 3 non-Clemson ACC teams for transfers we clearly wanted.

Verse and who is the other I'm missing?

But if AP was right and they only saw him as a depth player, it was probably the right move to wait and see who else comes available.

Agude, the UCLA DE who went to Miami.

Perhaps, and let me stipulate that the coaches know better than I about the roster, etc. That said, seems to me we could use more depth in the secondary, and unless we truly are going to add another 5 players (Bru+4) - which I HOPE TO GOODNESS we do - then it seems odd to pass.

Idk about that. We are in a really good spot with a number of recruits in the secondary, probably the best bunch in a while and I'm pretty sure we lead for all of them.

Nowwwwwwww linebackers, it's really meh right now.

We need guys for 2022 in the Secondary soo bad.. I like our High School recruiting trends right now, but we need plug and play guys for August. I would expect a bit more urgency!

The difference is, Burrell has the physical attributes to develop. McCollough just looks too slow.

I think we’re hanging too much on the Purdue game. It was horrible but I’ve seen people recover. But they need to bring in another corner regardless

There a magical thing called coaching and improvement that most teams do in the off season. I know this is a foreign concept for us in the past decade. Let's not discount that with this coaching staff.
Every season the biggest leap of improvement is said to occur between weeks 1 and 2. The same is also said for teams after year 1 to year 2 of a program. TIFWIW

Kyler Kerbyson on his google channel said today that, per the Spring scrimmage, defensive backfield is loaded with depth.

I hope he’s right. If our DBs look good enough against Tillman and our offense in practice I imagine they’ll be able to hold their own against the rest of the SEC. It would still be nice to get another corner though. I think Williams is going to be a stud, and Turnage showed a lot of promise at the star last year. Other than that it's hard to say what we’ve got though. Hopefully Hadden, Rucker, and Slaughter can make a big jump at corner as well as Charles and McDonald at the two safety spots and we can get solid contributions from Wesley Walker. I’m not sure how much Flowers and McCullough will improve at this point in their careers, but of course we saw it’s possible with what Theo Jackson did this past year. As far as Burrell goes I don’t have much hope for him. Maybe Christian Harrison has been getting coached up well by his dad and other guys this spring and he can give solid contributions later on in the season. I think Thomas has a lot of upside too, but don’t expect him to contribute as a freshman. We really could’ve used another guy or two in the portal in the defensive backfield. Maybe they can get a stud from outside the SEC after spring ball is over everywhere

Did he give any names? Just don't see "loaded" and especially at CB.
He said that we are loaded with depth. The consensus is no apparent super stars, but plenty of very serviceable depth. Sounded like we look a lot thinner due to current injuries that will heal.

That was my takeaway anyway.

His opinion, having seen them, is that our defense will be good enough. His words are that we'll be a defense that "dies slowly"--same concept that's been discussed here repeatedly. We just need a defense that can slow down opposing offenses. Hold them scoreless or to field goals more times than not, as our offense scores TDs more times than not. It's been described here as "breaking serve", I think.

He thinks we'll do that well, and is confident the talent builds through recruiting to make the move to next-level shut down defenses in the future.
