This isn’t supposed to come out rude but how do you know he’s a good corner. Dumas-Johnson is proven to be an elite linebacker. Aj Harris respectfully hasn’t proven **** and has never played a meaningful college snap
He was a freshmen and competed in a loaded room. He would have contributed more next year. I’ll bet they both start for Kentucky next year.

That may be true. But you and I both know the only reason you are calling him elite is because of that star ranking next to him. You could very well be right but calling him elite right now would be a lie

Never said elite. I said the LB and CB are good. And they are good players.

We want temple players. Don’t even post UGA players
Unpopular opinion incoming, but I wonder if our defensive staff recognizes the difference in "SEC players" and guys that can play and play well in other conferences. They are not the same. The SEC is another level. Some will poo-poo that idea, but SEC teams go to war with each other every weekend. It takes a certain type of player to bring that mentality.

If we signed both of those kids people around here would be calling for a title next year.

Because we seem to have issues filling immediate needs everyone likes to say these players aren’t good.

Its psychology 101

It is definitely worrisome. I’m not impressed with the Temple corner. I do like our other portal grabs so far though.

I have zero clue why they sent targeting any linebackers. Their play has been horrid and Herring still looked lost against a horrible Iowa offense. And we still don’t know for sure what we have in the young linebackers. If they are looking at that group and thinking Pili and Herring will be fine, then I am terrified.

Carter looked really good when healthy, Telander has been flying all over the field as the first guy off the bench lately, and Perry was even out there looking good in run fits vs. Iowa.

I think the staff likes the young core group of guys better than any of the transfer options. Plus we only really ever have two LBs on the field at a time so depth is easier to build there

I disagree. Perry looked slow and not an SEC linebacker. Telander seems to know where to be but still looks a tad slow for an every down linebacker. But hoping that’s thinking too much. Carter should be really good but who knows since he got injured. Herring is just not very good. Pili played ten snaps.

The other thing to remember is that Heupel has shown he wants portal guys with multiple years. If they bring in another LB, it's a clear signal to that room that they don't like what they have and they're looking for replacements. Portal is a 2 way street. With out youngsters, we've got some athleticism. They picked us so they want to be here. They have a relationship with each of them. They know them and what makes them tick. With the portal, I look at it with a bit more skepticism. It's like a JUCO kid. There's a reason they're in JUCO or jumping into the portal. I still believe that HS recruiting is your foundation. You fill holes via the portal IF it's a guy who fits. Kinda makes our emphasis on lower level players somewhat more understandable. You get a hungry player from a lower program who wants to prove himself in the SEC vs guys who are already in the league who are jumping ship for an easier path to the field, more money, attention from being recruited again, running from trouble, etc. I'll admit to lusting after some of these big names that are headed elsewhere, but in hindsight, maybe Heupel actually does have a plan and profile. Either we trust him or we don't. He's shown me nothing so far that makes me doubt him so....

The argument could be made that they looked slow because they were hesitant and didn't really know what to do? Game slows down and kids speed up when they simply react. Not saying I know this, but it is a possibility, no?

With a little more first team reps and an offseason in the weight room they will improve too. Herring actually played well in the bowl game. 3 solo tackles, 2 TFLs, and a sack. also had a pass defended

Yes and I said that for Telander. Herring and Perry are multiple year guys.

Played a horrid offense. Still saw him chasing a few people but luckily they are just that bad to make him pay.

I thought Herring did indeed play well in the bowl game, but only because Iowa plays onto his strength. He seemed much more comfortable not having to account for coverage. In the one or two plays they did target him in the passing game, he was trailing.

I'm sure he'll improve, but I'm not sure he'll ever be able to be adequate against SEC offenses. I fear he'll continue to be exploited.
