'24 Transfer Portal

I thought Herring did indeed play well in the bowl game, but only because Iowa plays onto his strength. He seemed much more comfortable not having to account for coverage. In the one or two plays they did target him in the passing game, he was trailing.

I'm sure he'll improve, but I'm not sure he'll ever be able to be adequate against SEC offenses. I fear he'll continue to be exploited.
And Iowa's athletes are a much better matchup for Herring. No one with speed, quickness, and change of direction. Much more seek and destroy targets which make his job much easier.

Yes and I said that for Telander. Herring and Perry are multiple year guys.
Weren't they both true SO's? Your implication as "multiple-year guys" seems a bit ingenuine, other than you just don't like them. Just because it's their 2nd year, it doesn't mean they are immediately going to play like a senior or that they have maxed out on their ability.

All that said, I would love a shiny new all-American LB, but I also think the coaches understand the potential of our LB room better than the fans, and it's pretty obvious which position rooms the coaches see as weaknesses. Who knows if it will work out but go ask USC (the real one) or Kentucky or Miami fans how all those shiny new toys worked out for them last year.

I don’t dislike anyone who plays for us. They practice and give a lot of time for our program.

I am only pointing out that I think they lack athleticism to be SEC linebackers. I would love nothing else than to be wrong and then shut me up next year. I’ve seen enough form herring to know he can’t keep up with his speed and that’s an athleticism issue. Can’t fix that. But I hope he grows in the position to recognize plays sooner and makes up for it by always reacting sooner down the road. Time will tell.

“We’re not doing enough in portal!”

Probable offensive starters next year:

WR - McCoy (USC)
WR - Thornton (Oregon)/Brazzell (Tulane)
TE - Staes (ND)
OL - Mincey (Florida)
OL - Karic (Texas)
OL - Campbell (Miami)
And how did injuries treat the guys on that list? Need more OL.

Herring is young and maybe overthinking his responsibilities.
Maybe he is too slow but next year or two will reveal his true potential.
Give the staff time to develop them.

I hear ya! I’m more impatient as I think we have a two year window with Nico to win a title and I don’t want to waste it. I know that’s a me issue ha

I hope like hell Karic is not. But everyone else looks good. Davis may take the starting role but we rotate tight ends a lot.

Not saying we don’t. It’s football, of course we do. But maybe portal isn’t the main issue?
Given the disaster that is our '21 class along with some of our recent OL evals, the portal is our only solution for next season be it finding a starter or an acceptable backup for when those injuries to our starters do come. Can't stand pat on the OL can we? With it being the start to the ever so brief Nico era, we have to surround him with the best talent possible.

Probably leveraging to get paid like all the other portal transfers they are signing.

When you overpay for free agents, the players you do have feel slighted or want what they are owed. Everybody tries to pretend like the short, very unsuccessful stint that CLK spent in the NFL with the Raiders prepared him for the new era of college free agency.

Yep. Just another aspect of the portal that coaches need to navigate. Maybe Heupel does, indeed, have a solid plan? Pay your own guys that you want to have back and don't overpay for the bling types but focus on good fits who you can count on to be solid contributors.

Unpopular opinion incoming, but I wonder if our defensive staff recognizes the difference in "SEC players" and guys that can play and play well in other conferences. They are not the same. The SEC is another level. Some will poo-poo that idea, but SEC teams go to war with each other every weekend. It takes a certain type of player to bring that mentality.
If a guy has been on an SEC roster but never seen the field that doesn't make him an "SEC player". Staff knows what they are doing.
