True Freshmen QB's -All you hear is..........

OP speaks the truth. We don't know what the freshmen might do but we have seen what the others have done, nothing good.

We probably would have won a lot more games with him if we had a defense that was worth a dam. I'm afraid we have the same situation on our hands.

Oh how we have forgotten a player named Tyler Bray...it was only a few years ago when our QB play was so pathetic that the University of Tennessee and its knowledgeable fan base (sarcasm) went against all logic and put in a true freshman against South Carolina...remember his first pass??? It was a pick six...then he threw mutiple TD's to keep the game respectable. Bray took his lumps but turned out to be pretty good (would've been better if coached up).....I can't stand hearing putting in a freshman will ruin him and we have no shot to win. The fact of the matter is that we will never know until it is tried....who knows....we may be surprised !!!

GBO:peace2:

Bray had spring practice and an entire offseason workout program January-July. Dobbs only had June-July. Ferguson only July. Totally different situation.

I also remember a freshman by the name of Manning we had to play because of injurys. He turned out to be a pretty good Qtb. Either you got or you don't. Look at ManzelI.. I have my doubts about Worsley. Nothing personal. It is the most important position on the team. He leads.. now ask yourself does Worsley have all the intangibles go be a good college Qtb. My answer is no. What's yours?

Agree. We need a stronger arm and a quicker decision maker.

If you're ever going to play your freshman QBs then play them NOW while you have your best O line. You want to start them next year behind the O line we will have then ?

I think next year's o-line will be better than the one we fielded in 09

I think we'll see a 60/40 split between Dobbs and Ferguson. Similar to when there was a split with Ainge and Schaefer.

Now, who gets the 60 and who gets the 40? Well, even Carnac the Magnificent can't foretell that.

Well so far Butch has been pretty high on both freshmen. Sounds like Peterman is out of the mix. Worley's play has pretty much taken him out of the mix. You could tell when he had to press to get the offense going he couldn't handle it. I understand we were missing two key slot guys. Although you cannot make excuses. He hasn't been able to throw the deep ball at all. You have to be able to stretch the field. We have WR's that should be able to stretch the field on folks.

Ok correct me if I'm wrong but is Peterman not listed as the second string qb? What makes you say he is out of the mix? He got more praise from Jones in the Monday press conference than ferguson and Dobbs together. I hope it's ferguson that gets the start but I believe it will be Peterman. Either way I believe our offense will be a lot more potent than it was with Worley.

I say put the worst one in and maybe he will quit and open up more schollys for next year. All I can say is I hope palardy don't get hurt he's half our offense and defense.

No way anyone would have thought / said this the past three years. Funny how things can take a complete 180.

Are you sure about that? Dobbs is listed on the roster at 193 lbs., but Ferguson is only listed at 181 (Official Football Roster - UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics).

I stand corrected. According to Riley's father, "when he got there on June 12th or 13th he was 173 and he gained 20 pounds by mid-August. The first game he had gained 20 pounds, but they’re feeding him about 5500 calories a day. That’ll do it.”

(On Riley’s weight)

“I think him and Dobbs are about the same weight. He really gained a lot of weight. Every time I talk to him he says he’s got two shakes in his hand with 3 scoops of Muscle Milk in each one of them. I guess they’re force-feeding him right now" (Riley Ferguson - Tennessee Sports Radio).

That is good to hear. Ferguson was desperately in need of some weight on his bones.

I'm asking out of ignorance...

Does this have any indication to the coaching staff's minset per this season? i.e. Are they trying to put weight on them quickly in hopes of playing one of them this year? Or do they generally try to get weight on freshman QBs this quickly, even if they are planning to red shirt?

I certainly am not privy to practice sessions or team meetings so I can only offer the perspective of a long-time Vol fan. There is no question that Riley is talented but he was initially listed at 6-3, 173 lbs. That is simply way too thin to withstand the rigors of SEC combat. Whether Butch and his staff reached an early decision to fast-track Riley to a more "playable" weight out of recognition of the limitations that Justin Worley possesses as a quarterback, I simply have no means of knowing that.

Most of those guys are in the Nfl now. The list of unsuccessful ones is much longer.

I agree that the list of the unsuccessful ones is much longer. Also, in most cases, there was no reasonable alternative, much like Ainge and Schaffer several years ago. At the present time, I assume Butch considers Worley a better alternative than the freshmen. That may or may not change. For now, I can only assume Butch knows best. He has seen much more of the QBs than we have.

No. The comparison was between the two current guys and Bray. I was merely pointing out that they were in a different situation.

There isn't a track record of true freshmen coming in and being great. There just isn't.

In the few situations where a true freshman has ascended to a starting spot, they have either won the job in fall camp or the competition was very close. In this situation, the competition was not close. Not remotely.
