what more did we need to know about Crooks that we know about Mangione?
there being questions and unknowns with Crooks doesn't equal us knowing more about Magione. those are two separate issues, which is my whole point.I would like to know pretty much everything about him. Gotta be a manifesto right? They all have one these days. What about the several different cellphones he had? And the laptops? Or the trips he took to DC leading up to the crime? How was he able to stage the weapons onsite, keep them from being discovered, gather up a Rifle and make it to the top of the buildijg 150 yards from Trump without being discovered? What was the nature of the explosive devices found in his van parked AT the event? Where did he learn how to make bombs? These clearly werent simple devices like a
truck full of fertilizer and diesel fuel...the 1st report said they were small devices that could be detonated remotely, and that he had at least 1 of them up on the roof with him. Where do you learn how to make remotely triggered devices like that? Who was this guy connected with? He was clearly connected with somebody...he didnt teach himself how to fabricate and assemble devices, or even where to source materials for a small devce. You cant buy materials like that over the counter. For good reason. How many kids his age have you ever met with burner phones/more than 1 cellphone? I have never met anyone with several different phones...i have never read anything that said the kid even had a job. Who paid for all this stuff? Van, explosives, bike at the scene, range finder, weapons (rifle was Dads i think)?
There are a million questions about him that need to be answered. We were an inch from Civil War 2...or at the very least some seriously bad outcomes happening in this country had Trump been killed. Why dont we know literally anything at this point? He is DEAD there is no trial or jury to worry about. Why have all the 3 letter agencies hid everything they possibly can since day 1? Why didnt they use the help and cooperation of local LEO both before and after the event? Why are there a dozen different decisions, all completely inept, fired on the 1st attempt type HORRIBLE decisions made that day with zero accountability? The American people have the right to know everything about the shooter who nearly wrecked this nation and the details of the events in PA just like they do for JFK. Hopefully Trump fires all those involved in the coverup and we can see who was really involved in trying to kill him. I dont think for a second that some random kid of average intelligence with google taught himself all of that knowledge and pulled this off by himself. I could be wrong...but we should know. This has been by the worst and most FOS admin in my 47 years of life and they disgust me.
If he shot a Pfizer or other pharmaceutical CEO and was believed to have posted about his vaccine complications on Twitter, the Left leaning MSM would have already deluged us with articles about being radicalized by right-wing echo chambers.we don't know if Magione was working with anyone, or who radicalized him.
Spot on. I would definitely classify school shootings and mass shootings as distinctly different than the aforementioned examples(assassination).I don't think we do have a right to know everything about him. In fact I would argue the focus on publicizing the shooters just leads to more shooters. copy cats, people looking for inspiration, people trying to figure out how to get their moment in the sun. all of that is driven by the media, and attention they get.

In 2016, the American Psychological Association published [a report (.pdf warning)] https://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2016/08/media-contagion-effect.pdf on the "Media Contagion" effect with regards to mass shootings. It briefly touches on the causes of mass shootings:
Mass shootings in public places that are not crime or IPV motivated appear to be crimes to re-establish power or take revenge, not always on specific individuals, but often on groups or archetypes of individuals.
[note: IPV is defined earlier in the study as intimate partner violence]
I suggest reading it in its entirety, but here's some highlights that start on page 25:
The most disturbing finding is that for every three incidents, at least one new incident is guaranteed, or copied, within 13 days. The contagion for school shootings is slightly weaker: for every four to five incidents, a new incident is copied within 13 days. The authors note that although it is clear a contagion is present, they cannot determine what caused the contagion based on the model alone, such as our assumption that the contagion is mass media coverage. They can only determine presence or no presence of contagion. However, it is hard to posit alternatives as to how one mass shooter learned of another mass shooter, other than through mass media.
[...]
When tweets about school shootings went beyond 10 per million, the probability of a school shooting in the next eight days went up to 50%. Nineteen days following the shooting, if tweets went beyond ten per million, the probability of another shooting went to 85%. Finally, if tweets went beyond ten per million in the 35 days following a shooting, it was nearly 100% likely that another shooting occurred. The authors also determined that school shootings are more influenced by social media than other mass shootings, however social media is still able to predict that the first ten days after an attack are most contagious for another attack, especially when tweets about mass shooting reach more than 45 per million. Also, unfortunately, the number of tweets about a shooting is linked to higher number of fatalities in the next few shootings.
[...]
If the mass media and social mediafess enthusiasts make a pact to no longer share, reproduce, or re-tweet the names, faces, detailed histories, or long-winded statements of killers, we could see a dramatic reduction in mass shootings in the span of one to two years. Even conservatively, if the calculations of contagion modelers are correct, we should see at least a one third reduction in shootings if the contagion is removed.
So it would seem that the motivations are linked to a desire for revenge against a certain group or archetype, as well as a desire for fame from their actions.
With regards to lessening the mass shootings in the US, I can say with some confidence that the solutions proposed in this study to stop naming the perpetrators and "sharing photos, writings, “manifestos,” personal likes and dislikes, family, work, and school history, or weapon preference of mass shooters with the public" are espoused in many other places and are something that both sides of the gun-control debate can agree on.
there being questions and unknowns with Crooks doesn't equal us knowing more about Magione. those are two separate issues, which is my whole point.
most of your questions about Crooks are not applicable to Magione, and vice versa.
we don't know if Magione was working with anyone, or who radicalized him. I mean I guess you could believe the crazy person's manifesto and take it at face value, but I doubt that stops the investigation that it was really him all by himself. so I would argue we don't have Magione as figured out as you think we do.
not every shooter is going to have a manifesto. if they are just looking for their 15 minutes of fame, or wanting to go out in a blaze of glory, there would be no reason for a manifesto. IIRC Crooks had searched multiple big names, it sounded like he was just looking for a target of opportunity and Trump fit that bill. IF that is the case, there wouldn't be a manifesto because he wasn't specifically originally hunting for Trump. He wanted big game, and Trump popped up on the game camera first so the bullseye was on him.
I don't think we do have a right to know everything about him. In fact I would argue the focus on publicizing the shooters just leads to more shooters. copy cats, people looking for inspiration, people trying to figure out how to get their moment in the sun. all of that is driven by the media, and attention they get. I would rather fight that fire by sucking all the oxygen out of the room and see if the fire maintains itself, rather than continuing to fan the flames thinking we will put out the fire that way.
Good post Louder. I agree with all of this, we are on the same page.
I 100% think that we shouldn't tell the names/ identities of these killers looking for their 15mins of fame. As long as the media is going to do so, i want to know everything else about Crooks especially any conspirators etc BUT that is only because he tried to take out a president. Not the same for a school shooter etc when its safe to assume no foreign country or political party conspired. Crooks is a special case to me...
I think one of your earlier points was really good. I think a lot of the difference between the public information available between Mangione and Crooks comes from one being alive, and the other dead.Good post Louder. I agree with all of this, we are on the same page.
