Trump to Force FDA to Issue an Emergency Use Authorization for CV-19 Vaccine Prior to the Election

Ready for your vaccine? Well, Papa Trump will make sure that you can get one prior to the election.

What's that? Phase 3 trials won't be done by then for any of the vaccines currently under study?

No problem. Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) will fix that.

But wait... what about the scientific process. I thought the Food and Drug Administration is in charge of deciding what's safe and effective when it comes to potential drugs and vaccines?

Wrong.

Donald J. Trump will steamroll the FDA into submission. They will be forced to agree to an EUA if the in-progress studies show positive results.

What? No that's not possible. The FDA isn't subject to political pressure. It's a scientific agency... they base their decisions on science!

Wrong again.

In fact, the FDA has *already* been bullied by Trump politically three times with COVID-19:

(1) March 30, 2020. FDA issued an EUA for hydroxychloroquine as a COVID-19 treatment;

How'd that work out?

(2) June 15, 2020. FDA revokes EUA for hydroxychloroquine as a COVID-19 treatment;

(3) August 23, 2020. FDA issues an EUA for convalescent plasma as a COVID-19 treatment;

Sunday, President Donald Trump announced that the FDA issued an Emergency Use Authorization for blood plasma. The president, the Health and Human Services secretary and the head of the FDA said the treatment reduced deaths in COVID-19 patients by 35%.

It did not, and scientists questioned the FDA’s claims about the data.

“You saw FDA be bullied by the president of the United States into approving something that they didn’t want to approve earlier, because he wanted them to do that,” said Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia, in an online interview Monday with the editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Trump said he expects a vaccine "very soon." He has floated the possibility that a supposed "deep state" conspiracy at the FDA might delay it until after the presidential election Nov. 3.

Offit said Trump is “trying to now bully FDA into approving, possibly through an Emergency Use Authorization, a vaccine or vaccines before they’ve been adequately tested. That is a major mistake."

"Vaccines can be given to millions of people, hundreds of millions of people around the world, even billions," said Eric Topol, a professor of molecular medicine at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. "How are we going to trust this man and our FDA in the months ahead regarding a vaccine Emergency Use Authorization? We’re in the middle of a pandemic; the stakes are really high. They couldn’t be higher."

Despite Trump's repeated statements that a vaccine is coming soon, there simply hasn't been time for that data to become available.

"There is no way there will be any meaningful data this year, period," Topol said. Anything that comes that quickly is "a hoax."

When Trump forces the FDA to issue an EUA for a vaccine in late October - right before the election - he will effectively screw *all* of us. Who's actually going to voluntarily take some half-ass baked vaccine that's been ramrodded politically for the sole purpose of helping Donald's re-election prospects?

Not me.

What is your source for this? All I see is typical social media internet crap

The CDC didn’t revise numbers. They simply stated that 94% of the people who have died had underlying conditions. That would include obesity. What percentage of our populace is obese? A lot. Furthermore, this disease is showing some concerning potentially long term impact on recovered patients health. The heart for example. If I have covid, recover but have heart issues down the road and have a heart attack, based on many peoples interpretation on here we would then have to count that as a covid death because it would be the underlying condition. No I don’t believe this to be a serious problem for young and healthy people. Most disease aren’t. But I will take the vaccine. And before someone screams don’t you worry about how much faster this vaccine was developed when compared to other vaccines, I will simply say do you understand how much better at medicine and technology we are now vs then.

Sounds like being fat is dangerous. Who'd'a'thunkit? Is there a vaccine for that?

And there are a lot of fat people. There's concerning potential long-term heart impact from that. Maybe just covering their mouth would be more impactful than covering their mouth and nose.

Are the flounder strong or in good numbers this year?

No. First year they've instituted a moratorium on them. Season opened August 16th and closes in Sept.

We caught a bunch of small ones today, no keepers. Did have a nice Redfish (27"). Bunch of lizardfish, a couple bluefish and spanish mackerel.

Hotter than pajebus. Done by 11.

Yeah, the shore fishing is just starting to pick up a bit... normally the big trout start moving through mid-month chasing and endless stream of cigar minnow. My favorite type of fishing.

Also, September is good for swordfish here. Probably make a trip in the next couple weeks when it cools down. We actually fish for them during the daytime.
