Given the political climate in the US and the fact that TrumPutin Gate is (and will remain) the biggest news story, Putin can now blackmail Donny, even if there's nothing to hide. Both are equally trustworthy, and the American public will treat both as essentially the same.

He's also nuts if he thinks federal investigators won't follow the trail wherever it leads. Trumps financial ties to Russians are bound to come up somewhere. If something doesn't look right Mueller won't back off.

In another NYTimes article tonight, Donny threatened Mueller not to look into his family's financial dealings "outside" of Russia.
