I know. Such a silly argument. Mueller is an inferior officer reporting to (until recently) a senior officer (rosenstein) who was approved by the Senate. Other than Calabresi, I think almost all legal scholars think Mueller does not require Senate approval.

I've never seen anything like it, people actively cheering for anything that can bring down a President. They don't seem to understand what that will do to this country.

The obvious answer is that Nixon thought he could use them to gain leverage on or even blackmail others if they admitted anything unseemly or illegal. He was evidently too dumb to realize it could work both ways. I believe installing the device was solely his idea, not the brainchild of an aide.
