Two Main Reasons Why We Lost

Vol fans: Heupel got too conservative. Should have been more aggressive

Same Vol fans: what the heck was Heupel thinking going for it on fourth down?
🙄🙄🙄
There is a difference between calling plays aggressively and being stupid going for it mid field while sitting on a lead, on the road! Punt it inside the ten and play D.

Funny you say that considering that was the exact same play where Tyler Baron was choked held which should have resulted in a penalty.

Should have came back if the ref actually did its job right.

Whenever fans like a coach, the refs get blamed more often for losses. The refs definitely missed some calls but they missed them both ways. Herring could’ve been called for unnecessary roughness when he was trying to punch out the ball but they didn’t call it. The game was totally winnable if Heupel would’ve stayed aggressive in play calling and defensively, but instead he got out maneuvered big time by Saban. Enough with blaming refs.

We lost because we got blown out 27-0 in the second half. Weren’t competitive at all. We can open 50 separate threads nit picking reasons but the bottom line is we were hot garbage from the coach to every player. I bet even the water providers screwed up royally dishing out nutrients.

You are correct on the second part. Herring was the one who was flagged for the clapping signal, giving Bama a 1st down. On one of UT’s possessions later in the game, a Bama linebacker clapped his hands - and there was no flag.
It was 6 (Beasley)

1.) Heupel called a tight 2nd half. I know the defense was playing well but it seemed like his intentions were to sit on the lead and hope the defense keeps Bama’s offense off the field.

2.) Officiating was atrocious.

• Missed PI call on the Bama defender considering he never turned around and looked for the ball.

• Burton makes the catch and kicks our player. Unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that was never called.

• Bama OL choke holds Tyler Baron and somehow, no holding penalty was called.

• Castles was held in the end zone by the Bama safety that would have resulted in a TD, no holding penalty was called.

• That fair catch might have been the worst call I’ve ever seen considering his arms aren’t even above his head, yet that means he’s giving a clear signal?

Heupel did some great things tonight but the 2nd half was probably his worst coaching job since he’s been at Tennessee.
Lost all respect when all on refs. Sorry. All on CJH

The predictable and bad play calling is troubling because the game should be a reflection of how you practiced all week. Did we only practice running up the middle all week ? Letting JM run up the middle when we're in the red zone reeks of no confidence in the QB or receivers I think Milton and our receivers are good enough to be running the same plays we used last year, except we don't even try. I don't remember a single game this year where we tried any razzle dazzle plays, (shuffle pass up the middle, end around, etc).. We do what we used to do under Butch and Cornbread= get behind in a game and THEN start to play like we want to win, then we open up the passing game when we're forced to by the clock. Pitiful

In reference to #1, After halftime, Huepel's offense didnt get the ball back until his team had lost momentum, given up a TD, and was giveb the ball at the 3 yard line. You have to be comservative in that scenario. You are away and the defense is hyped up to try and make a play. We end up punting.

The next time the offense gets the ball back, its 20-17. Bama has scored 10 straight. The offense gets the ball near midfield and Huepel goes for it on 4th and 1. That isn't necessarily sitting on a lead and playing it conservatively with your defense.

The defense surrenders a TD.

Next drive we get called for holding (go figure) and the 10 extra yards is too much to overcome, though we get 17 yards of the 20 yards needed. We punt.

You surrendered the lead. Next thing you know the offense is trying to pass it deep and it results in a fumble return TD for Bama. Again, not exactly a comservative approach.

I just don't see us being conservative. Other than we looked conservative on defense coming out of the half and Bama's receiver runs right past us in Cover 3.

We lost the game in the first half when we had to settle for 2 field goals. You have to put a team like Alabama away when you can and we didn’t do it. We are just hamstrung when your wr group can’t get separation and when your qb can’t hit them when they do consistently.
I hate having to agree with this, but it's 100% true. Just damn.

Horrible play calling second half. Unacceptable to settle for 2 fig’s after first and goal. Unacceptable to line up in shotgun on 4th and inches and not get it. We have a 250 lb qb and a line that’s been moving the line of scrimmage all year for our RB’s. Practice lining up in I formation and learn how to run a damn qb sneak for crying out loud instead of starting the play at a 3 yard disadvantage. Those two plays and the failed first and goals were the game. Love Heupel but very disappointed in our coaching tonight.

As to your last point, I would redirect your attention to SC last year.

At least Bama is extremely talented.

Yep, Had we converted in the RED Zone it would have been a much harder comeback for Bama! Won’t win much kicking field goals!

On our last meaningful drive of the game, Squirrel was held once on 3rd down and twice on 4th, no calls. But they call Jeudy-Lally when he barely touched Burton on a bell 5 yards out of bounds to keep a Bama drive going, after we stopped them on 3rd & 7.

Different rules for each team.
The refs had to make sure the spread stayed intact on our last drive. There is so much shady sh*t going on in college ball now that it has lost its luster for me.

Our receivers made some good plays in the first half. Keyton and Squirrel made ESPN highlight sort of catches. Beyond that, not much there in the passing game. Knowing that, Bama shut down our run game in the second half. Yes, Reffing was bad, but it's soooo Bama to blame the refs every time they lose, I just won't go there. I think we would have been beat even with normal refs. Milton should have been rolling to his right when he lost the ball. He was standing flat footed looking to the right. I think Hadden being injured in the first half revealed a true weakness in our secondary and it took two plays after half to exploit it. We were weak at DB last year and still have no depth there. Bama was blowing our OL off the line the whole second half because we became one dimensional. That's my take.

I'm not generally someone who complains about officiating but they clearly impacted the game. Their offensive line was allowed to hold the entire game. Their defensive backs were allowed to hold the entire 2nd half. Even with that we still blew it ourselves in so many ways. The decision to go for it on 4th and 1 in the 3rd quarter was not a smart coaching decision. Heupel really needs to re-consider the play calling on 4th down as we are 3 out of 13 for the year. UT otherwise fell apart at every level in the 2nd half and couldn't generate anything offensively and couldn't convert in the red zone. Bama did raise their level of play in the 2nd half and we didn't show the muster to equal it. They controlled our RBs and our passing attack in 2nd half was poor. The fumble recovery for the TD was the nail in the coffin.
