From what I've heard, Alexander's recruiting visit was cancelled because Pearl may wind taking in as many as 3 transfers.

One being a certain Iowa Hawkeye

Alexander's visit was cancelled because he wasn't significately better than any of the 08 recruits Pearl is after.

Okay. Just remember where you heard it first. Smith has a kid in Nashville and his dad has gotten sick.

via some dude posting on scout.
I was listening to Basilio today and from what he was saying this is already in the works. I didn't hear it all but I thought I heard him say that Chris Low was saying it was happening right now and UT was preparing the paperwork to get him eligible next year.

I thought Tyler met with Licklighter (sp?) this past weekend and decided to stay at Iowa. Did something change?

3 transfers? How could we be taking three transfers? Am I missing something?

That is a rumor sure but his dad was sick 3 years ago....Smith has not decided if he's going to transfer yet.... There has been no discussion between Smith and UT and cannot be.... It is nothing more than speculation.

What are the other two mascots

I'm assuming they are probably including J.P. Prince in the 3. That would be Tyler Smith, J.P. Prince, and some other anonymous player. Does anyone have any concrete evidence that this is in the works? Until then, consider me a skeptic.

It definately seems like the wheels are in motion with Tyler Smith. Bruce would have to have reason to cancel a visit from a player who could impact the team significantly next year.

His dad is in Nashville, correct? Then Vanderbilt and Memphis are also options for Smith.

There is a lot of conversation about this on an Iowa message board called "The Hawks Nest." However, they haven't mentioned anything about where Smith is going, just that he is going somewhere else.

I don't know if he has the academic chops for Vandy, and why would Memphis want him? Hell, why do we want or need him? But Bruce is a god, so whatever he wants. Either way, I still want a big '08 signing class.

Alexander? Impact the team significantly? I'm not sure about that.

No reason to sign a JUCO if he can't impact the team in a big way since his shelf life would only be 2 years. He would have given us a toughness we sorely lack and a polished backup down low, of which we lack as well. He would have seen 15 min/game next year, that's big enough for me to say he would have made a nice difference.

Everything right now seems to indicate there is some truth to these rumors. Will Tyler Smith end up at Tennessee? A week ago I would have said no way. But here are a few reasons I think something might be about to happen.

1. As mentioned earlier, Smith has a kid, and his father is also very ill.

2. Apparently Tyler Smith didn't show up at an Iowa basketball banquet last week.

3. For whatever reason, Tennessee canceled Alexander's visit last week. The reasons given were that Pearl didn't feel he would be any better than anyone else we had for next season. These may very well be the case. But it is interesting how we had seemingly been recruiting this kid pretty hard, but then all of a sudden cancel his visit, right about the time that the Tyler Smith rumors begin.

4. Back when the whole Smith/Pearl controversy took place two years ago, most people knew that it was Billy (Smith's father), not Tyler, that had some vendetta against Pearl. By all accounts, Tyler and coach Pearl never even met face to face. Several people even said that if it had been up to Tyler alone, he would have still come and played for the Vols.

5. Several local media outlets, including Basilio and Rob Lewis, have indicated that there very well might be truth to these rumors.

To the poster that said it would be illegal if Pearl contacted Smith, you are right. But what apparently happened was that Smith contacted ut. Nothing wrong with that.

Also, a couple of days ago there was an article, I think from the KNS. This was after the news that we decided to pass on Alexander came out. Someone asked Pearl if we would just hold all of our scholarships for '08. I can't remember the exact quote, but Pearl basically that they are still keeping an eye out. Well, Alexander had really been the only player we were really looking at closely.

Also, Smith and Alexander are both 6'7".

It may be nothing, but something tells me there is more to this.

I am not sure where you got that evaluation from. Alexander is more of a '3' and not a true post. He has no back to the basket game on the block. He is not a big shot blocker. His asset in the post would have been his rebounding. Basically, they decided he would not be enough of an improvement over Childress to warrant a scholarship. Plain and simple.

Sources close to Smith say he acknowledges the fact that there's no "I" in team...however, those sources also say that Smith is quick to point out that there is a "me."

Oh, but how nicely Smith would fit in to Bruce Pearl's program. He's got the tools to dominate in a system like UT has now. IMO, it's too good to be true.

He wasn't supposed to play ahead of Childress, but alongside of Childress. Alexander is not a shooter either he plays around the basket, and rebounding is what we need to get tougher on, because when JaJuan is your most tenacious rebounder, something is wrong. He would play the 4 mostly in this system because there's too much depth otherwise. Tyler Smith will not play ahead of Childress, but we would still take him because he plays a different position.

Pearl did not cancel Alexander's visit after months of recruiting because he all of a sudden realized he wouldn't play in front of Childress.

From what I've heard, and just thinking about the history here, this ain't gonna happen.

Let's not turn this guy into Charles Barkley. He's a midrange player, who's can play on the perimeter as much as he can around the basket. He's a 3.

Now, he would have played some 4 at UT because of our needs, and our style of play, but he's not the post presence that we need.

Besides, he committed to Illinois yesterday anyway.
