Tyler Smith

He wasn't supposed to play ahead of Childress, but alongside of Childress. Alexander is not a shooter either he plays around the basket, and rebounding is what we need to get tougher on, because when JaJuan is your most tenacious rebounder, something is wrong. He would play the 4 mostly in this system because there's too much depth otherwise. Tyler Smith will not play ahead of Childress, but we would still take him because he plays a different position.

Pearl did not cancel Alexander's visit after months of recruiting because he all of a sudden realized he wouldn't play in front of Childress.
ummm, yes he would.

Don't you think that he would have realized that before the the day before his visit? What would make him decide it right there and then? One would think that Pearl could figure that out through the course of recruiting and not abruptly. Alexander's visit was cancelled due to the fact that Tyler Smith would play the same position for us and the writing was on the wall that he was going to want out.

My bad. I think he would play a different position than Childress just because he's a slasher and less of a banger. Childress will most likely spend a lot of time at the 5 next year, and Smith wouldn't.

I'm no basketball expert but if Childress is UT's 5 we are in trouble.

We have no true 5, and won't for awhile unless we get a big man in the 2008 class. Childress is just as much of a center as Crews (maybe even more so) and Chism. Basically for the next two years we will have either a 3 F and 2 G lineup or a 3 G and 2 F lineup.

Crews and Chism IMO play better post defense than Childress. This is just my opinion.

Chism by far. He has the best footwork and basketball IQ of our big men. And a lot of others in the SEC as well. Crews never really gets into good position though and therefore picks up the fouls to put him on the bench. But that being said it really doesn't matter which of them guards the opposing team's center, basically whoever, besides Chism, it is is just good for 5 fouls.

I disagree. There was hesitation all along about whether or not we would take Alexander. Do you waste a scholly on a guy who will give you two years, and part of that time would be spent learning the system? Especially considering the talent in the 2008 class.

Pearl decided that Alexander was not much of an upgrade over what we had and would fight for playing time next year. I believe Pearl is comfortable with the team we have coming back and the addition of Tatum, Williams and Prince. There is no question that scholarship can be used on a player that is more talented in 2008.

As for Tyler Smith, I'll believe it when I see it. I think there is too much baggage with Tyler's dad and the alleged violations that occurred. Not to mention, I don't think he'd see the floor before 2008-2009 anyway.

No reason to sign a JUCO if he can't impact the team in a big way since his shelf life would only be 2 years.
I think you hit the nail on the head here.

I believe the reason Pearl canceled his visit at the last minute is that he didn't want to waste the kid's time by coming down here if we weren't going to offer.

I have heard from some reliable sources in Pulaski TN that Tyler Smith is headed to Knoxville as long as his paper work goes through and he does not have to sit out a year. I hope for his sake he goes to Knoxville it will be a much better fit than Iowa. I just hope the fans accept him and dont hold it against him that he decided to go to a prep school and then Iowa. He averaged 15 points as a freshman in the Big 10 and could really help UT

Everyone needs to understand:
1. You cannot file a hardship until you transfer and then the institution you transfer to has file it on your behalf.

Meaning he would have to transfer before UT could file for him to immediately play and it could be Sept. or Oct before anyone would know.

The above is only valid if Iowa releases him.

That makes sense. The premise of the hardship is that you're switching schools to get closer to home. The best evidence of that intention is to do it. Applying for a hardship with a wait-and-see approach would indicate that basketball is driving the decision more than the hardship. Hence the requirement.

Just saw the article. I also spoke with a former high school teammate of his tonight. Looks like he's really interested in wearing the orange and white next season. Stranger things have happened I guees.
