As I recollect, their support for the operation was... reluctant, at best. Within days they were criticizing for not having done it earlier. Then they mocked the pic of him in the situation room and implied he had nothing to do with the go decision.

As someone stated before, that was a situation where it might have been better to ask for forgiveness rather than beg for permission.

And it really bit him in the backside in the long run.
