Uconn is in trouble..

Baylor was shaky in their first exhibition for 3 quarters and shaky vs UCLA for 3 quarters. I predicted we would win this game and am glad we did even though I don't think it means as much as people would like to think it's November both teams will get better. The people complaining about fouls I hope realize Baylor had 14 fouls & 11 fouls in their exhibition games. They also had 14 fouls vs HBU and 15 vs UCLA so 16 tonight isn't exactly out of range for them but I get it you wanted UConn to lose.

Baylor is missing Niya. My one major issue with Mulkey has always been (and I believe I have said this on here before) is her willingness to allow her teams to be overly reliant on one player and then when that one player leaves no one else has developed the skills that player has. This team was gong to struggle sometimes on offense not because they don't have many options but because while Niya was there no one had to be a good passer. They (Baylor) will be very good come March as will many other teams.

Niya's absence is offset by the fact that Alexis is better than 90% of the other PGs in the game right now. Kristi Wallace is a pretty good facilitator as well. The thing that was the most surprising about this game was the fact that Nina Davis was a complete no show. I don't know if this is because Niya knew how to pass to her or what, but she looked generally ineffective whenever she had the ball. They were a better team when they went with the two sophomores. I was going to say I don't know what one should expect of a 5'11 PF, but then I remembered that Gabby Williams is the same. Nonetheless, Davis better pick it up or Kim needs to find ways to get her involved if they are going to be better.

My comments on the fouls was not so much the ones that Baylor committed (save for that Duke-ish flop/acting job by Kia Nurse at the end), but moreso the ones that were not called on UConn. They were calling body contact against Baylor for guards going up against posts, but not against UConn...specifically Butler. There were a couple of times where a foul should have been called on her trying to guard Wallace. Then you have the missed offensive foul by Nurse trying to avoid a tie up after a steal in a critical point of the game, then the acting job because Prince barely brushed against her. UConn is good, but sorry to say...Kia Nurse is low-class.

Everyone got to watch two players from Tennessee tonight: Davis and Dangerfield.

Senior All-American Nina Davis: 0 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 turnover.

Freshman Crystal Dangerfield: 19 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 turnover.

I really don't know what to make of Nina Davis tonight. She's gone up against UConn a bunch of times when they had Dolson, Stewart and Stokes defending her, and she looked like an All-American every time. I don't know if she's less effective against smaller players, or if her game just doesn't mesh well with the current team. Mulkey had zero reason to play her tonight, other than the fact that the two sophomore posts were in foul trouble.

Dangerfield is really, really good. She looked like a senior out there tonight.

...but Anastasia Hayes team beat Dangerfields team in the TN state championship.

Nice try, but Holly was a season too late in securing the best talent in the state. I just can't put into words how awesome it will be to watch a TN player become the next UConn great and hang more banners for Geno the next four seasons.... :jpshakehead:

However far UConn goes this season, Dangerfield will be a big part of it. I don't know how UT allowed Tennessee native Dangerfield to get away.

How did UConn beat Baylor - Dangerfield- not the refs, not the coaching - Dangerfield.

She may be better than Jefferson.

Did anyone else notice Kim's makeup when they did a close-up of her? Man, did she have it caked on! I was getting flashbacks of Tammy Faye Bakker.

My understanding is that Tennessee was never in the picture for Crystal. She wanted to play for UConn for some time.

Dangerfield is better right now than Moriah was as a freshman. It took her until the last month to start playing like a star. Unbelievable that Crystal can not only do that in her first home game against a Top 3 opponent, but make an immediate impact as soon as she came in the game.

UConn is lucky to have gotten such a talented player to step right in for Moriah. My condolences to Saniya Chong.

I don't believe Jones is a good option for PG. I actually think that is a misuse of her skills but I think Kim likely won't trust anyone else to do it. Great for SG but not for PG. She has a tendency to dribble too much. She is a scorer first and foremost.

For example if you get the chance go watch the Oregon St. vs Baylor tourney game last year. I also predicted that game and my 1 contingency was as long as they make Jones run the point Oregon St. has a great chance to win.

Also since the rules changed (I believe that was the start of the 2013-2014 season) you can basically be mauled in the paint and no call and touch fouls are all the rage outside of it. I also was charting where you drive from and if that matters in whether a call was made last year and will continue to analyze that this year but it seems some teams have yet to figure out some fundamental things about positioning. They certainly have a lot of big but I would not call them quick. They were getting beat to their spots.

Either way like I said I expected a win so I am not surprised. I like how together the team played no one cared who was scoring, they played hard, the scrapped and most importantly I think they learned somethings that will help them along the way.

I don't think she has room to operate around the basket with all those tall tress on this year's Baylor team.

They were much better than I expected them to be. Nurse was projected to be the best returning player, but Collier and Williams are excellent players on both ends of the court.

Those trees were there last year, and Nina was still putting up AA numbers. I don't know if it's because Kalani has gotten off to a fast start and become a priority in the offense, but Davis looks like a forgotten player out there. Very few touches, and mostly on the perimeter.

If Mompremier continues to improve, Brown continues to be a force in the paint, and Cox gets adjusted to the college game, I could see Nina becoming a non-factor for Baylor this season.

For all the talk about how deep Baylor is and how many players they have on the roster, in tonight's game Prince played 40 minutes, Jones (39), and Wallace (36).

I think Davis has only ever played against UConn once and that was her freshman year. That by the way was the ugliest, slowest UConn game since the Championship game vs Stanford in 2010. That is def a game you should watch if you are incredibly bored one day.

I had heard for a few years that this young Ms. Dangerfield was going to be very good.. I was told as well that she had no interest what so ever in being a lady vol and her dream school just happened to be the most hated school in LV country which made it even feel worse. :clapping:

You're right...the second game I was thinking of was against ND in the tournament the following year. In any event, Davis was fantastic in that game against UConn as a freshman...and I think she was playing the center position against Dolson.

Chou will eventually get some of Prince's minutes once she gets adjusted to the college game. It's hard to keep Wallace off the court...she's the consummate glue player, and Jones is their best player.

Davis only played UConn once before tonight her freshman year. Funny that she got 17 rebounds (7 ob's) against Dolson, Stewart & Stokes, all 1st round drat picks and only 2 tonight.

I think the obvious difference tonight was Dangerfield. Someone on this board said when she was being recruited that she was more of a scorer than a pg. Right now that seems correct. But I suspect that Kim was unprepared for her.

For the second game in a row, Cox hardly got off the bench. I know post players take longer to transition to the college game than guards, but Baylor has a lot of bigs ahead of her in their rotation.

I didn't see Ucon's game against FSU but my takeaway from this game is said all by Hoya. Did we have no chance to get Dangerfield? She is going to be their next monster on the court.

It is really hard to beat UConn with bigs because of how aggressively they defend the guards and passing lanes. Posts can't do anything if they don't get the ball. When they lose it's generally one of three things or a mix of three things.

1. UConn has an off night.
2. Someone on the opposing team has a career night.
3. They could not defend the opposing teams guards adequately.

I never thought Baylor was going to be an issue it's teams like DePaul & Temple (like mlindsay stated previously) that are going to give this team issues. The funny thing about looking at a game on paper is that it can be overwhelmingly decisive or completely misleading.

UConn has played a lot of teams with imposing size and supposedly dominating post players and you can probably only count on 1 hand how many times that team has beaten UConn in probably 15 years or more.
