247:
More and more names getting cut or misdirection?
Seemingly each day another promising candidate in the pool Florida would likely be pulling its next head coach from is eliminated by one media outlet or another.
Already, GatorBait.net and others have reported that Rich Rodriguez and Dan Mullen are very unlikely to get any call for the job. On Tuesday, the Gainesville Sun's Pat Dooley crossed several more high-profile names off the list.
Dooley ruled out Bob Stoops, Brian Kelly, Mike Gundy and Chip Kelly. While that doesn't necessarily mean that all four are definitively out of the picture, Dooley is fairly well plugged in and it's reason enough to believe that those four are pretty unlikely at this point.
On Stoops' end, that corroborates the most recent information we've heard at GatorBait.net. Florida doesn't appear to be positioning for Stoops.
On the others, it's a little surprising. Chip Kelly was always a pipe dream and that's why he never made any of our hot boards or updates. Along with a show cause from the NCAA that might scare off Florida, Kelly's having great success in the NFL and the timeline wouldn't work barring an announcement from Kelly that he'd take the job after his NFL season was over.
While that's not entirely unprecedented for an NFL coordinator soon to take a college head coaching job, it would be pretty out of character for an NFL head coach. And it'd very likely burn any bridges Kelly might have back to the NFL in the future. It just doesn't make much sense from Kelly's side.
We haven't been able to confirm that Gundy is out of the picture, but as Ryan Bartow reported over the weekend, Gundy is attempting to position himself for the Florida job behind the scenes. GatorBait.net has gotten corroborating info on that to support its accuracy.
On Brian Kelly, we haven't been able to find out much, so we're left with Dooley's statement that he's out. At the very least, given Dooley's comments, it doesn't appear like Kelly is a front-runner for the job.
In the end, with so many high-profile names seemingly out or at least not at the front of the pack, what's left, exactly?
Two names have created the most buzz in the last 48 hours.
Freeze seems to want the job, but does Florida want him?
GatorBait.net has previously reported from separate sources that Freeze is both happy in Oxford and potentially interested in the Florida job. A third source chimed in Tuesday to inform us that Freeze is indeed interested in the job.
Freeze is one of the few candidates whose name hasn't been crossed off who might fit all of the things Jeremy Foley is looking for: he'd be a relatively splashy hire, he doesn't have any known off-the-field or NCAA issues, he's an offensive coach and he's had some success in a major conference.
At this point, it seems very clear that Freeze or his people want his name out there in connection with the Florida job. What's not clear is whether the interest from Freeze is legitimate or simply to secure a raise from Ole Miss.
It's also not clear whether the interest would be mutual. Things on the Florida side have been very quiet since Will Muschamp's firing was official, but we've heard bits and pieces on other candidates.
That's not true of Freeze. In any case, he's definitely a name to keep an eye on until Ole Miss cements an extension and raise for him or until he's ruled out.
Could Fedora really be an option?
Before you freak out like many people did when our own JC Shurburtt suggested that a name off the radar shouldn't be ruled out, more specifically North Carolina's Larry Fedora, GatorBait.net got the same information through a separate avenue right around the same time Shurburtt posted that news on the site.
Moreover, not only is Foley good friends with Fedora, but sources tell GatorBait.net that the Florida administration is comfortable enough with Fedora's lack of involvement in the UNC academic scandal that it's not thought to be an issue at all.
Now, would Florida actually hire Fedora as head coach?
Almost certainly not. The Gators can't possibly afford to gamble on a coach who has put together worse records every year he's been at UNC and failed to do anything in a weak ACC.
Fedora's defenses have been atrocious, and as much as the Gators want offense, what they want most is winning.
Nothing about Fedora's current stint at Carolina indicates he's the answer.
So rest assured that when we say Foley and Fedora are tight and the academic scandal isn't an issue, we're not saying that to imply that Fedora is on the legitimate candidate list. He isn't.
And if he is, Foley should be a lot more worried about the backlash from the fans that type of hire would create than us being wrong about him being a legitimate candidate. It's just not a move that would satisfy the fan base at all.
But we might as well share the info as we come by it in this case. There's a healthy relationship there between Fedora and Forida, but we just can't wrap our head around it being anything more than that.
