UFC Thread

I thought about putting that but I was lazy and figured everyone knew that. Especially after the Bones-Hamill fight. Its a stupid rule btw, only put in because guys break blocks with the 12-6. I actually thought me and you had the 12-6 rule once, coulda been someone else. I'll be less lazy in the future, and less presumptuous in thinking everyone will just know what I mean. :)

Part of me doesn't like the 12-6 elbow rule, but I understand, from a safety perspective, why they are outlawed. You land a 12-6 elbow flush, and it's almost a guaranteed fight ender. Can you imagine the amount of significant cuts and broken facial bones there would be if 12-6 elbows were allowed?

You would have a lot less cuts with 12-6 than 3-9. 3-9 will straight cut you. The 12-6 has stigma because of karate guys breaking blocks with it. MMA guys wouldn't be able to perfectly line it up to have the force that those guys do, moving target and all. I've heard many MMA fighters and announcers say 12-6 wouldn't be any more damaging than 3-9. I've heard a few say 3-9 is worse cause the risk for cuts is greater and more likely to end a fight. As far as a flush shot with it breaking bones, that's a risk with every flush shot to a downed opponent. IMO

I have no scientific proof to back it up, but I would think a 12-6 has a greater chance to cut a fighter than a 3-9 would. I could be totally off.

I would like to hear someone question Dana on why it is illegal. I don't think I've ever heard it discussed. Matter of fact, other than the Jones DQ, I don't think I've ever heard the 12-6 elbow discussed at all.

BTW, the 'he's not ready argument" is absurd just as Dana explains in the article.

Yeah that is ridiculous. Aldo looks like he is scared of Pettis with this story coming out. He needs to sack up. This is the kind of fight that can make you a legend in the sport. Almost every fan of MMA was pumped to hear this fight was booked. To cancel now would bad for business and bad for Aldo's legacy.

I'm going by what I've heard fighters say. I think it's the Athletic commission that won't allow them. I don't recall ever hearing Dana speak on it. I Rogan is very vocal in his displeasure for it. Jones has often said he prefers using 3-9 as it's better at cutting people. Of course that's subject to fighter preference.

I've got to believe it's because MMA does not want to see guys get their noses/faces exploded while laying on their backs. It's almost impossible to punch someone while on the top in a 12-6 motion. However, it is very easy to strike straight down with your elbow with much much greater force. It should be illegal.

I can guarantee you that Matt Hamill would have much rather been "cut" with 3-9 elbows than have his face smashed in with 12-6 elbows. He wasn't cut by Jones but when the fight was called he was in la la land totally with a smashed in face. Cuts look good to the judges and the fans. However, they aren't truly indicative of which fighter did the most "damage."

True, but they stop fights.

Sure cuts stop fight. However, I can't even think of the last time I watched a fight that was stopped due to a cut. I've ordered every PPV since UFC 100.

Actually to kick myself here, I dont remember either. That may be myth like the 12-6 damage. Lol I'll still go with the UFC guys and announcers that think 12-6 is a stupid rule. They tend to know more than we do.

Btw Hamill was done no matter what Bones threw. I hate that his lone loss is over that, and I don't like Bones.

"When a 12-6 elbow is thrown to a downed opponent like Matt Hamill, it lands directly, without glancing like a punch or a level elbow, and has all it's force concentrated within the small surface area of the elbow (much smaller than a fist). The head has nowhere to go and absorbs all of the force on the cheekbone, nose, or even eyeball; wherever it happens to land."

Good explanation of why it is and should remain illegal.

That's cause dudes break blocks with this technique. A fighter isn't going to keep his head perfectly still. Also Brandon Vera and his broken orbital bone would like to discuss 3-9 elbows and how they don't do damage. As I said I'll stick with the fighters that say they should be legal.

Gimme a break...unreal.

Where did I say that 3-9 elbows don't do damage?

Also, that was from a fighters perspective.

One of the first fights I ever watched (Fedor, circa 2004) was a no decision because of a cut. It made you squeamish.

Lol chill out homie. You were talking about 12-6 breaking bones, honestly something we haven't seen. I referenced Vera cause I have seen 3-9 break bones.

That's the first time I've ever heard a fighter say that. You think they shouldn't be legal, I think they should. Too bad neither of us make the rules I guess.

That was nasty. Another nasty cut was BJ on Joe Daddy. I remember BJ choking him and blood shooting into the air. The BJ kick to Sanchez was a nasty cut too.

Also the dislocated shoulder did Hamill in, not the 12-6 elbows. That fight should not have been a DQ loss for Bones.

Hamill said he lost in a post fight interview. He said the elbo wasn't a factor and didn't want that win on his record.

Lost with class, but that was easy to say...everybody that watched that fight saw him get raped for about 2 minutes and then the fight was called. It wasn't even close.

Jones had only been training MMA for less than 2 years at the time, so no surprise that he was hazy on rules.

I'm afraid GSP is going to try to kill nate diaz. I'm serious about the kill part. I really think he wants to kill him.
