UGA Coin Toss Dilemma

Mike Leach is the only coach in the SEC that will not defer the ball. I understand @VFL-82-JP's analytics but I don't see CJH electing to receive. Heupel has said many times that his philosophy for defense and special team play to to be super aggressive. The premise here is to steal possession. Our D may get burnt going for an INT or punch out over a tackle, but Heupel's quick strike offense can make up for a few aggressive mistakes. I'm surprised we haven't seen a fake punt yet. Foreshadowing? Go Vols!

We will defer if we win the toss, we have most all year. GBO!
I think the times we've defered this season, we were playing at home. And by deferring, we got to pick which end of the field to defend, putting the opponent up against the Student Section when trying to score.

That benefit could outweigh the increased chance of an extra possession by the opposing team.

In Athens, at the Dawg's stadium, where we won't have a Vols student section to use as a weapon, I'm going to gamble that Josh will elect to receive if we win the coin toss.

I could be wrong, though. Let's wait and see what happens.

Just another game....defer
Yeah…I think both coaches will defer if they win the toss. Having the ball to start the second half can always be an advantage especially if you score late in the first half.

To me it’s obvious the “Big Balls, Petal to the Metal CJH” will elect to receive if UT wins the coin toss.

If UGA wins the Coin Toss will Kirby have the balls to kick to UT first thinking his defense can get a quick stop and gain field position or will he elect to receive to keep UT from getting the first score.

I really think if UGA wins the toss this could be a pivotal decision for Kirby.

I think UT would elect to receive and so would Kirby even though he would probably prefer to go on D first against most teams.
Kirby has no balls!

If I am not mistaken, we deferred at LSU.

I don't think so - doesn't fit the pattern or what he was quoted as saying elsewhere in this thread.

LSU should have deferred. I understand though why a home team would choose to 'take the ball' given Tennessee's ability to score. Though to be honest, having the ball to start the second half is more often times more important than being aggressive when the game starts. Bigger risk of going 3 and out and wasting that opportunity. By the start of the second half a coach has a better feel of the ebb and flow of the game. Just my opinion. Seen many teams be aggressive only to fall flat when they did not score.

I hope we defer and have an opportunity to score before the end of the first half.

Same if you take the ball first - you lose the opportunity to widen the score at the start of the second half and the opportunity to close the gap if you find yourself behind. That will and can set the entire tone with the second part of the game.

And the first play of the game is very rarely the most important play of the game.

Heupel likes to defer the games this year we started with the ball we did not win the coin toss. Game starts 0-0 no advantage to ether team yet, if defer and you are trailing much better to get the ball out of the break. If you are winning then you can dagger them by adding more points out of the break before they even touch the ball. Strategy advantage to defer.

I like getting the ball to start the second half more. With our fast paced offense we can sneak extra points in before the half and double it up in the third.

Defer, give the crowd time to settle down a little and maybe the defense comes up with a turnover or a big stop. Plus, getting the ball first after halftime is always good.

The problem is that if kirby kicks and we run it back or get a big return, then our O takes the top off the D its over and he knows it. Or take the ball give up a turn over or 3 and out and give the ball to us with good field position and we score fast his d will quit and its over not a great position to be in

I feel majority of coaches in a big game prefer to defer and have ball first in second half. I see both coaches doing this whoever wins the toss.

If Kirby wins the toss, he'll run out to midfield and ask the ref to flip it again. If it comes up heads he receives, tails he kicks.

No that thars great coaching.

Do we always elect to receive in the first half or we we generally defer? This team has been pretty good at scoring right before the half and then getting the ball back at halftime too.
i would stick with whatever we normally do personally
I hope the guy that thinks you get extra possessions if you get the ball first doesn't read this.

He’s said in the past that he likes to try to have the last useful possession in the half and the first possession in the second half as well. I think he has grown more as far as controlling time of possession at the end of the half. We can go up tempo or milk the clock at this point as well.

Hype defers.. and gets the 10-14 swing scoring list in 1st half and scoring first in 2nd like he did with Florida and LSU (and Bama I think). It all but put the game out of reach for the Gators and the tigers.

Nothing is as demoralizing as to be getting beat at half & having to kick off to start 3rd Qtr to a team you’ve not been able to stop.

Would this underlined phrase above be considered an Idiom or malapropism for our group here?

Something similar to "pocket presents", "Prime Madonna" oops "pre madonna", etc, etc...

Go Vols!
Or Payton Manning or Lane Kiffen

Mathematically, the Vols always want the ball first at the start of the game.

Because we run drives faster in the first half, which yields a higher chance the other team could gain an extra possession over us.

Goes something like this: say we're running 2:00 drives in the first half, while the other team's drives are taking 4:00. That's a 4/6 or 2/3 chance at any given point in the half, they've got the ball. When the half ends, there's a 2/3 chance they'll be on a drive.

If we start the first half with the ball, and they end the first half with the ball, both teams get an == number of possessions. If they start AND end the half with the ball, they get 1 possession more than us.

~ ~ ~

You might say, well, the same thing is true in the second half. But it's not. Primarily because we tend to slow down our drives in the second half. Whether because we have a nice lead built up, or the lads are tiring, or for whatever reason, Volunteer drives in the second half take considerably longer than in the first.

So if in the second half our drives are 4:00 and the other team's are also 4:00, that's a 50/50 chance the half will end with the other team holding the ball. Much better odds for us NOT to get stuck giving them an extra possession.

~ ~ ~

Geeky, I know. But it explains why--when they play us in particular--every team should choose to go on offense first. And if we win the toss, we should take the ball first as well.

[overtime is different, because both sides are guaranteed the same # of possessions -- there we still want to go on defense first]

Just another way Josh Heupel & Co are turning conventional football wisdom on its head.

Go Vols!
I could tell on Tawkin VAWLS you are very confident about this game
