Zero sense made

He obviously has your attention, you pointed out the fact he sounded confident. And then you pointed out why dont our players sound confident vs why they just give coach speak. You made it a point to start the 2nd thread on floyd so its apparent to me his confidence worries you.

Maybe this is pure arrogance but how come Tennessee players never exhibit this kind of confidence. Now don't get me wrong he is going to look like a fool if they don't get many sacks or much pressure. It's just the fact they sound confident, and we sound like a bunch of coach speak we are always talking up teams like Arky state and Utah State as to how great they are. If they played a team like Georgia they would be laughing during interviews.
(I'll add the picture of the tweet below)

Nothing admirable about braggards. Barking dogs are usually cowards. Low growls are what you gotta watch out for. Children are all that's impressed with loud mouths.

Players need to be cocky and confident. Almost to the point where it's disrespectful, teetering on the edge.

Being cocky doesn't win championships.

I prefer our team to have class both on and off the field. When Cam Sutton dropped the hammer on the Oklahoma receiver a couple of weeks ago, he took one look at him and walked away. He acted like he's been there and like it's nothing new for him to make a big play. THAT is what comes across as being "tough".

Because teams like Utah State and Arky St could beat UT if they're not careful... This team hasnt earned the right to talk smack or make predictions.

I didn't have a problem with the way he acted after that hit. I'd give him a B+.

It's really easy to root for him.
And that hasn't been the case for all of our qbs.
I really hope our oline can hold up and protect him Saturday and for the rest of the season.
Go Vols!

Players need to be confident. I personally can do without cocky. Bama is cocky.

Confidence on the field, backed up by their actions, not trash talking. Hell, I'll take a bit of mean and nasty in our defense so long as it scares the crap out of an opponent.

But cocky this team does not need. Win, get some swagger, make other teams worry about us coming into their home and smashing them in the mouth and stealing their girls. But be humble about winning.

Sounds like good locker room material to me. Coach Mahoney should make a poster of this comment and hang it above the OL's lockers.

It's one thing to have bulletin board material....it's altogether a different thing to have the ability to do anything about it. Our OL has been hearing about how bad/questionable they are all Spring, all Summer and now 3 games into the season....they were supposed to have a chip on their shoulder from the get-go and prove everyone wrong, but they just haven't been ready to do that or they're just not talented enough to do it period.

Georgia has a very talented front 7 and are very good at bringing pressure. Obviously, our OL is by far the weakest position group we have, so it's a bad matchup for us.

Let's hope our boys grow up real quick and that Coach Jake schemes up a gameplan that gives them a great chance to have the success we need them to have this week for us to have a chance to pull off the upset.

Chatt-townVOL, you are absolutely correct. Butch's methodology also promotes confidence but, in so doing, he inspires an indomitable esprit de corps. Butch also will go out of his way to avoid providing opponents any bulletin board material. His caution in this respect isn't fundamentally dissimilar from Bear Bryant's tendency to badmouth his own team while simultaneously building up his opponent, even if he knew he was probably going to beat that opponent by five touchdowns.
You must have forgotten already how Mr. Butch went out of his way to light a fire under the Bammer players last year, as if those boys needed any bulletin board material, with his red team label.

You must have forgotten the " I can beat UGA with 1 hand tied behind my back" comment from Clausen.

Possibly my favorite story regarding this sort of psychological warfare was from Gen. Neyland.

The story goes that prior to kickoff one third-saturday-in-October, Neyland approached Alabama's Wade and humbly asked if Wade would shorten the second half if Tennessee was taking a beating against the superior Tide.

Wade agreed.

Tennessee went on to stun Alabama and win the game.

If I was Butch, I would have JW hurl a deep pass off of play-action to start the game. Whether it was completed or not it would serve notice that UGA better not cheat toward the box this game.

I would rather he throw a pass he might complete
