Yup, that's what I am thinking. Can't be much worse than 2.0 or we would be losing all of our players, though.

On the surface, I don't care. It may provide some personal credence to my low opinion of Cal and UK, but I don't care too much. On the other hand, there are some interesting issues it does raise.

1. Are they playing ineligible guys? I'm not sure of the requirements, but a 2.02 average must mean a few aren't making the minimum GPA established by the NCAA.

2. There must be issues with ARP and scholarship losses.

I have to wonder about the accusation of SAT fraud that keep popping up. It's not that hard to maintain a 2.0 in college, especially if you are taking Walking classes. In any event, Cal's going to have to stop his BS rambling about taking his players' education seriously.

Just my 2 cents... The one and done should be thrown out. Also if a kid decides to go the college route I think two years should be required. Don't force them to play a year in college and/or go over seas. If they screw up by skipping college... Big deal it was their choice! They can survive like the rest of us and work for a living.

The way it is right now IMO does not benefit the NCAA or the NBA.

  • NCAA gets college athletes that do not give a rat's ass about their classes/grades (rightfully so for soon to be millionaires).
  • NBA gains nothing by forcing them to wait one year. Do you think Wall, Cousins, etc matured any in one year of total BS of responsibility?

Well - 2.0 GPA is being nice. I'm sure if you take the walk-ons out of the equation then UK would be lucky to have something that doesn't start with a 0.something. And that's not joking around..

I don't see what the problem is. A 2.0 GPA is a C average. Don't freshmen usually struggle in their first academic year?

Cal has a press conference today @ 3pm for a special announcement. Not sure what the topic is, but you can bet the media will jump all over the GPA issue. I'm sure Good ole' Jerry T will be first in line.

I guess I'm the only one that's not surprised by this, nor am I expecting the NCAA to do anything about this (as I would hope they would).

So, what was the press conference about?

I would be furious if I was Cal. Not at the players.
I would be furious at the guys I paid to take the tests for the players! If they are getting paid, they should be held to high standards and should be able to pull in at least a 2.5.

So, what was the press conference about?

per KSR:

- Not surprisingly, the status of Terrence Jones was discussed – or at least as much as it could be. Coach Cal said they had not received any new Letters of Intent and indicated that they were not certain if one would arrive or not. However, he did note that he will not recruit a kid who is committed to a school unless he decommits publicly .

- On the subject of his team’s grades, Cal gave a couple of responses, first channeling 19 year-old me by saying that “bad semesters happen” sometimes, before reiterating that he is committed to the idea of academic growth. Cal cited his past at Memphis and UMass as indicators of potential success at UK. His goal is to make sure his players graduate and, according to him, he has a history of doing that.

- For the first time publicly, he at least acknowledged a situation with Darnell Dodson, saying that the junior guard’s status is still “up in the air”. Cal didn’t speak to reasons why Dodson’s status was uncertain, but he did make it apparent that his potential involvement in next year’s team was very much unknown with him as well, saying that he really didn’t know if Dodson would be back.

- Cal said he’d be shocked if Eric Bledsoe and Daniel Orton return to UK and expects them both to sign with an agent and remain in the draft. No surprise there.

- Cal did have a funny line to ease some of the apparent tension in the room. When speaking about how next year’s team would shape up, he assured everyone that they would be fine and the team would again be a good one. Then, he added that he hopes it’s at team that you can’t play a 1-3-1 against. Boom! Cal humor!

AND.....

UK is also starting a JV team, following the advice of one coach Larry Brown. This is Cal's way of appeasing the local in-state racists who always insist on having local "white boys" play on the team. This way, they can chuck it from 3 all they want in JV games.

Or at least thats my opinion.
