Undisciplined...

How about Heup. Shouldn't he be setting the tone for the team... leading by example? How about...
- dropping a few pounds
- shaving
- taking the gum out when addressing the press
- upgrading the game wear

These are not my original thoughts but I have to agree.
That has absolutely NOTHING to do with this topic at all. Why in the world are you focusing on this thread. That ranks about 80th on the issues with the team at the moment.

I'm very supportive of Heupel but the optics post game were not good. He represents the program on and off the field. It doesn't need to be pin point cotton and silk tie. Just be disciplined and sharp.

Compare his post-game presser and Monday presser. Mondays was much better. Post-game his shirt looked like Fashion by Omar the Tent Maker. He chomped gum nervously. Had a shadow. Monday he had a well-fit shirt, clean shave, no gum... he looked like a football coach.

I'm not close to the program so I don't see day-to-day but I do know little details make a big difference.
Let me see, why might he have been a bit rumpled in his appearance. He just lost a game that the team should have won. I am sure his moral was far less than that of a convicted felon, and probably just wanted to get on transport and head home. Monday, he had time to collect his thoughts and go on. This is asinine in the extreme. The LOTM have reached a new level of insane.

Nobody is wearing a coat and tie on the sidelines anymore. Nike has a say in what is worn on the sidelines.
A coach can wear what he wants, Nike can’t tell a coach what to wear. No most coaches don’t where Ciara these days but I still see a wide variety and that Fleck guy never got the message that you couldn’t wear a coat. Basketball coaches same thing, you see more casual but some still dress up. GBO

I’m not gonna dignify most of the insults you’re hurling at coach Heupel with comments; however I will say a lot of people speakers and singers chew gum to keep their mouths from drying out when speaking/singing.
Agreed, and the man has a nagging cough. Maybe the gum helps.

Yeah, like I said a lot of people who give speeches and sing use gum to help the salivary glands produce more saliva to help with dry vocal cords/mouth… dry mouth/throat/vocal cords can definitely lead to coughing

The negativity is exhausting. Tennessee is coming off an 11-2 phenomenal season, one fluke loss away from getting in the playoff. Heupel could have coached butt naked last year and this forum would have cheered it on. This year is obviously a hangover, lack of talent year…the undisciplined play is not acceptable and obviously not the standard. Be appreciative that it’s disappointing to lose on the road against a lesser Florida team. CJH deserves more respect than the small ****** percentage of our fan base gives him.

Looks like the same Coach who beat Bama, was it an issue then ?

We need to bring the bricks back. We are going to build this discipline brick by brick. Hehe.

Do not read my comments as someone who disrespects or does not like Heupel. I've been supportive. This thread is about discipline. Discipline does not just happen. It is the painstaking diligence to do the little things with excellence consistently. There are many lessons available on discipline but my favorite is this speech from a Navy Seal to the Unoversity of Texas 2014 graduating class. It's about the little things that add up to change the world (or football team). It's worthwhile...

Lessons in disciple from a Navy Seal:

  1. Make your bed every morning (the little things in life matter)
  2. Every paddle must be synchronized; everyone must pull together and you need a strong coxswain to provide direction
  3. Nothing matters but the will to succeed; it's the size of heart that matters -- not the size of person
  4. Uniform inspection: Always strive for perfection and be prepared to manage failure
  5. Know the standards and work hard to achieve them. Be willing to put in the extra work to achieve those stands and do not fear failure
  6. Be a risk taker (I think of Inkie Johnson)
  7. Stand your ground... summon your strength and punch your adversaries in the mouth
  8. When things are darkest is when you must remain calm. You must be your best in the darkest moments
  9. The power of hope that it only takes one person to change the world (or football program)
  10. It's easy to quit but never ever do so!

Discipline and striving for excellence never ends. It's not about the last win. It's about building a culture to sustain excellence over time through continuous improvement in all facets of the game. Discipline is at the core and is a learned behavior.

So based on what is He no longer striving for excellence or no longer showing the discipline He had been ?!

UT is obviously not a well disciplined program. You tell me what Heupels doing to improve. My point has been, it takes intentional effort to create a culture of discipline. Read my posts in this thread.

It starts at the top and what I saw in Heupels FL post game was not a good representative of a highly disciplined program.

Start with the items in my original post, set an example for the team, push excellence in all facets of the program (make your bed, polish your buttons, never quit).

So in His 20 wins v 9 losses what have You seen differently that would lead You to believe lack of discipline is a issue ?! What did You see ?

I am not an Xs/Os guy. My casual observation...

- penalties are killing us. VOLS have about twice as many penalty yards as opponents.
- missed catches
- terrible tackling
- players smiling on sideline during Q4 FL. At least act like you care
- QB running ball OOB on 4th down (again!)

Bottom line, this team does not pass the eye test. Asking me what evidence I have of lack of discipline is like asking for evidence there's fish in the pond or alcohol in the whiskey.

I am an Xs and Os guy. I see a less talented team compared to last, particularly on offense. I see a lack off communication in general and poorly coached DBs in particular. Officiating has been ******, but You've got to overcome that. A lack of preparation and lack of talent is the issue at hand. It's low hanging fruit to suggest that all of sudden lack of discipline is the problem. There's nothing to suggest this team won't improve by season's end

1) Ii doubt Heupel could wear a suit if he wanted to. Nike has contracts now that coaches wear their gear. JH prefers the comfortable look

2) He chews gum cause his mouth & throat is probably irritated from talking loud for 3-4 hours.

3) He could be 400lbs & y’all love him if he’d won Sat night.

All this "Holier than thou" stuff is TOTAL BS! Do you think that Bama, OSU, UGA or any other LEGITIMATE championship caliber program would "suspend" 1st stringers because of a fight or weed or speeding... NO! WIN!!!! CJH is trying to make examples of guys who are critical to wins and losses. He keeps it up, he'll be out on his ass before you blink. THIS ISNT Cub Scouts. This is big time, BIGGER $$$$ sports. Do whatever we need to do, IMO. Of course... being in the bible belt... thatll NEVER happen. Unfortunately. We'll just keep "suspending" players and taking losses. Its a UT thing.
