Uniform/Helmet/Shoe design thread (merged)

Actually knowing the UT heritege with Uniforms, and that original uniforms under Neyland were Black....I liked the throwback to that color. I wouldn't want them used at a homecoming game or more then maybe once a year.....but arguably black unis go back to when this program was at it's greatest. I got no problems with them being pulled out once a season.

Neyland was an assistant in 1925, his first year ever at UT, and started his head coaching career at UT in 1926. According to that picture that depicts all the uniforms in UT history, they started wearing orange and white in 1925. So, therefore, they only wore orange and white while Neyland was the coach, making your argument false.

The historical data on this point, even from official sources, are somewhat conflicting. This document (TNJN - Tennessee football uniform history), published by the University of Tennessee School of Journalism and Electronic Media, indicates that "In 1927 the Vols decided to correspond more with the school's colors of orange and white and wore the first orange jerseys, and have been wearing them ever since." Perhaps, that statement simply reflects an official declaration of policy, one that validated several prior years of the usage of orange jerseys.

On the other hand, UT's Athletics Department's website (UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics - Fans) states that "Tennessee football players did not wear orange jerseys until the season-opening game in 1922. Coach M.B. Banks' Vols won that game over Emory and Henry by a score of 50-0." Finally, this mural (University of Tennessee Volunteers Football Uniform and Team History | Heritage Uniforms and Jerseys) depicts an orange jersey with white rectangular panels attributed to 1925.

It is probably safe to say that orange jerseys have been consistently worn since no later than 1927 and were worn, without official sanction, for several years prior to that. In any event, this pushes the span in which orange jerseys have been part of Tennessee's football uniform back to no less than 85 years, and perhaps as much as 91. That definitely qualifies as longstanding, deeply entrenched tradition.

Totally inaccurate post. Neyland never used black jerseys. And the program was not a great program when we wore black jerseys. It would not take very much research for you to correct your facts.

bump- DP, anything worth mentioning going on in the uniform world? do you know if CBJ is going to keep the players wearing suits on the Vol Walk?

Does anyone know if UT will wear orange or white pants this year, or is it still too early?

And I hope UT breaks out the all orange at least once this year. Preferably against Vanderbilt.

Check this out: Tennessee replica helmets going back to the late 1940's. It is interesting to see the subtle changes throughout the years.

Personally I think that a 1963, 50 year anniversary edition could be interesting. We could have numbers on one side, a power T on the other, and the stripe down the middle with the white facemask. Keeps things fresh with a nod to tradition (at least in my view).

I'd like to see an orange helmet with a white power T from time to time and it would be cool if Tennessee went to a gray facemask like they had prior to 1983

I would like to see what the orange helmet with white stripe and T would look like before I would agree. Personally I feel like that slides too close to Clemson.

I think the one iconic part of our uniform that should always stay basically white is the helmet. That is one tradition that has stayed the same since helmets turned from leather to plastic. I am indifferent to the grey facemasks. My only thought is that if the helmet is either all white, or all orange, with the opposite color for trim, adding a third color (grey) just looks disjointed to me.

Here's what a similar helmet would look like(1974 Clemson) replace tiger paw with power T.

I admit, I'm in love with the old version of the Power T.

Kansas announced an extension with Adidas today a month after announcing an extension with Nebraska: KU athletics renews its deal with adidas for more than $26 million - KansasCity.com

They are working on an extension with UCLA currently and should announce something soon. The 9-month exclusive negotiating period with UT begins in July. Hart had initially considered allowing that to expire to put the contract out for bid, but his knowledge of the financials on the extension Alabama signed with Nike prior to his leaving there has many believing that UT will re-up with Adidas during the exclusive period.

I like that helmet, for Clemson.

For some reason, I really like our helmets. I can debate on subtle updates to the jersey/pants, but the helmets are just clean and iconic.

I would only be for bringing it out for certain games. I'm for keeping the white helmet as the main helmet. I'm for changing the facemask from white to gray however.

Adidas doing some interesting things with Texas A&Ms shoes...
