I am in between. I believe in tradition to the point, but if the traditional is ugly or drab, it needs to be tweeked. If I were a uniform design guru, I would make helmet logos for Alabama, Penn State, Nebraska, and Ohio State, and reverse the changes to the Texas Helmet. I have seen some good helmet concepts ideas at
MG's Helmets The best helmet out there? I give props to Navy. Best helmet ever!
As to uniforms I would give a third color, I would add some grey highlights to Alabama (very subtle), Silver to Penn State, and some subtle white trim to Michigan. Since Tennesse is now adding Smokey Grey to it's pallet, I would add very subtle trim highlights to the home and road uniforms. I know some would call that a slap in the face of tradition, but two colors in uniforms in any color combination is boring to me.
The old school uniforms I like (though I may not like the programs) are Georgia, Florida, Florida State, Clemson (though they should always minimize the purple), LSU (who should wear purple jerseys at home), and Wisconsin.
As to "new school" some of it is just plain gaudy. Oregon and Maryland is an example. Multiple Logos, and using every color you can think of is just tacky. New school uniform I think are heading in the right direction are Arizona State, Washington, TCU, and Tennessee. This years changes mostly pleased me, but I hope Nike can make the next step without going insane with it. I know the OP listed Tennessee as Old School, but since Butch's fashion show,I believe Tennessee is now a "tweener". best of the new school? Kentucky's Black alternate. they may not be playing so well, but that is a cool look for them.
I have always liked most of the NFL uniforms. IMO, the best are the Packers, Steelers, Jets, Rams, 49ers, Chargers, and Falcons. Changes over the past 10 or so years that I didn't like are the Dolphins, Giants grey pants, and the Ravens wearing purple jerseys with black pants. Seattle's new helmet looks good, but the uniforms are trashy. I mention the pros, because many of their uniform templates over they years would look sharp for the college game. As to throwback week, less is more.
Sorry for paddling on, guys. It's an off-season Saturday.
