Agree with you in a way, but there is another way to look at it. When our daughter was two, she and I went on a business trip with my husband. You would have had to have seen my daughter at two...in restaurants we ate in shifts because it was unfair to other customers to have to listen to her. One day I put her down in the hotel port a crib for a nap, the ultimate insult. It was hot and I just had a diaper on her. It was bad; I tried sitting in the hallway but worried about her in the room unsupervised. I went in and after a while, there was a knock on the door. It was the hotel manager; I had been turned in for child abuse. He had a straight shot look at her crib from the door, she was standing up screaming, in just a diaper it was obvious there were no marks on her body. It just took a second for him to realize who was being abused...mommy. He apologized profusely, but I thanked him for coming to check and never had any hard feelings towards whoever erroneously reported me. My line of thinking: if someone thought something was being done to a child, they should speak up, and the one they reported the concern to should have the courage to check it out.

Now in this case, it sounds like the "authorities " overreacted. The dad had appropriate paperwork etc. They could have just explained to him there was a concern and asked for verification; he obviously had the paperwork. Getting details and calling the mother makes sense too. It's not what they did, but how they did it...assuming the reports are accurate.

The way it is reported sounds horrifying and there is a major need for some correction and or training. But, better 1,000 busybodies' issues checked out (even if poorly done) than leave 1 child in a bad situation.

Yes, I would have been upset if I was the parent, but ultimately I hope I would be appreciative people had cared about my child's safety and well being. Not saying I wouldn't have had a serious discussion with company's HR/management about the appropriate way to address said issue:).

This story is interesting in the sense that it shows how the market's natural mechanisms can be better regulators than the government...

United was probably within their legal rights and in order to get justice, according to how the masses view the case, the courts will have to basically say **** off to their own laws....

Contrast that with the market, which is just killing United. Stock is down 3% today and they are dealing with a PR nightmare. They learned the hard way that they need to up the compensation for bumping people and their policy will change. No need for government.

For $600 million they could for the forseeable future be moving crew ANYWHERE needed in a brand new 8 seat $11.5M Learjet 70. Why kick anyone off ever?

So United Airlines, at the days end what have we learned about customer service from this incident?

Place overbooked customers nearest to the door............

If your car trip is about 4 hours or less, it is better to drive. If your drive is 5-6 hours, depending on where you are going, it's basically a wash. Anything over that, it is probably better to fly.

Problem here is that you almost always have to connect somewhere. By the time you get to the airport 1+ hour early, fly to Atlanta, Charlotte, etc, layover, board and fly to your destination, then get luggage (if it arrives), it's often no quicker than driving 6-8 hours.

We drove to Fort Lauderdale over spring break, because it was only 3-4 hours longer and plane tickets were $3500 for the five of us.

Knoxville to Fort Lauderdale is 12 and a half hours of driving. I'd really have to think through that one myself but I understand your decision. A lot of variables to factor in like who or what you'll be trapped in a car with for 12 hours. Pets, infants, or toddlers can really be the deciding factor.

8 hours is a good cutoff point to determine if you need to fly or drive.

This is a fair statement! I think it's the optimal driving time as well. We typically do Knoxville to Destin in about 8 hours. One year we decided to try St George Island instead. Believe it or not the extra 2 hours of drive time made a huge impact on us.

Ok, Grandpa.

We did break it up, though...8+ to Orlando, then 3.5 the next a.m., as we had to be at the Port around noon. Did the same coming home, but took a scenic trip up A1A and spent one more night on the beach.

I don't know why airfare was so expensive on our dates. It was really going to be right at $4k all said and done.

I wasn't the only one on the trip that agreed. :p

You call me a grandpa then admit to breaking up your journey both ways. Get out of here! :)

So can $3500 lol

I had to watch that video a couple of times before I really understood what was going on. That bald headed tool of a flight attendant challenged a passenger to hit him. I applaud that passenger that wasn't going to stand by and let that jerk run rough shod over that lady and her kids or him.
The American airline companies haven't yet figured out how to run a successful company. There is no all in on cheap and crappy service. You can run a successful company by having good service and cheap fares. Southwest has done it for decades. Apparently United and American need to just cease to exist before the US airlines understand that customer service is why they even exist.
